I picked "Babylon" for the station, because a lot of what happens in the Babylon 5 story comes out of Babylonian creation myth, which says that the universe was born out of the conflict between order and chaos.
The diplomatic set-up on Babylon 5 is clearly modeled on the United Nations with the five member Babylon 5 Advisory Council roughly analogous to the Security Council and the League of Non-Aligned Worlds representing the General Assembly.
Overall, Babylon 5 strove for even-handedness in its treatment of religions, notably in the multi-faith gatherings in the episodes "And the Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place" and "The Parliament of Dreams", although arguably the appearance of Kosh in the guise of a Christian angel was intentionally subversive.

As a writer, the influences would really tend to be early ones, so I'd cite Eric Frank Russell, HP Lovecraft, Bradbury, Ellison, Tolkein, Clarke and "Doc" Smith as being at the top of the roster...
As he Doug Netter and others considered the daunting task of shooting the pilot and then the planned 5 year series, JMS mentioned have just worked out the final scene of the whole thing - which he then described to them.
Then he revealed that what he had conceived as "the last scene" was the destruction of Babylon 5 with the shuttle departing and the honor guard of ships.
