In the 1970s a large land development, the Baca Grande, was established to the south and west and several hundred homes have been built.
The Crestone area, which includes the Baca Grande and Moffat, Colorado, is a spiritual and new age center with several world religions represented; including a Hindu temple, a Zen center, a coed Carmelite monastery, several Tibetan centers, and miscellaneous new age happenings.
The Baca Grant was one of the first large tracts of land to be fenced in the West and in its heyday was the home of prize Hereford cattle.

Baca resident "Betty" looked out over the valley and observed a "large, irridescent green ball' that appeared to be "low in the sky to the west" over the Center, CO area (25 miles SW of the Baca).
Two witnesses in the Baca Grande Development (north of theCO/NM border about 90 miles) claim to have watched a "huge craft hovering over the center of the [San Luis] Valley." They described unblinking red and green lights that seemed to be arrayed around the object.

This grant, and the project that it funds are the culmination of tremendous grassroots support, combining the efforts of local, state and federal governmental agencies, the Baca Grande Property Owner’s Association, the volunteer efforts of the Land Trust and the contributions of numerous private land owners.
