Bacabs: the bacabs are the canopic gods, thought to be brothers, who, with upraised arms, supported the multilayered sky from their assigned positions at the four cardinal points of the compass.
(The Bacabs may also have been four manifestations of a single deity.) The four brothers were probably the offspring of Itzamná, the supreme deity, and Ixchel, the goddess of weaving, medicine, and childbirth.
The Maya expected the Muluc years to be the greatest years, because the god presiding over these years was the greatest of the Bacab gods.

The bacabs are also related to the four days which begin the Mayan year, Kan, Muluc, Hiix, and Cauac, which in turn are related to the four world directions.
This shift in alignment is probably due to the fact that Landa mistakenly placed the Kan (yellow) deities in the year Kan, and thus shifted all the year bearers clockwise one quadrant.

This volume is the latest contribution from the second phase of research at the site begun in 1980 by David Webster and William Sanders.
The volume is a collection of five articles by senior researchers at Copan that focus upon a single structure: The House of the Bacabs (9N-82).
This structure is one of the largest found outside the main group at Copan and appears to have had its major use during the Late Classic Coner phase, the period during which the site reached its peak of organizational complexity.

"The Ritual of the Bacabs" is a manuscript containing more than 40 chants which would be used by H-Menoob in order to exorcise, placate, entreat, or otherwise communicate with the various spirits which cause sickness and death.
The manuscript which comes to us was written in the late eighteenth century, but it is not clear whether or not this is a copy of some earlier document.
The modern chants are dialectically different from the chants of "The Ritual of the Bacabs", more so than modern formal speech is from sixteenth century formal speech.

There is much more to see — the zoological park, hermitages, municipal markets, museums of contemporary and modern art, palaces, parks, universities and theaters — but time is limited.
The next morning, we track the ancient Maya and seek out their mysterious gods: Chac, the long-nosed rain god; Kukulcan, the feathered serpent known to the Aztecs as Quetzalcoatl; the four Bacabs, who stand at the world's four corners, each holding up his corner of the sky.
The Mayan kingdoms, their pyramids or "lofty houses" as they called them, their temples, palaces, royal courts, sacred precincts, art and poetry may have rivaled the golden age of Greece.

Unfortunately, little of a specific nature is known of K'awil.
The name Amayte K'awil, or "'Corner Tree' K'awil" (Thompson 1970:229), suggests that he had manifestations in the four worldly corners, much like the Bacabs or the Chaacs.
In any case, it is of interest that Thompson (1970:226) associated the name K'awil with God K—this because of the "emphasis on vegetation" he saw in God K, and the corresponding agricultural associations of Itsamna K'awil.
