In the early 1980s a few bachata musicians, especially those whose music was of the more romantic variety, made an effort to distance themselves from the negative images associated with the term bachata by coming up with a new name.
First of all, the term bachata provided Dominicans with an appealing continuity between the traditional informal family and neighborhood parties of the same name ande the musical genre that grew out of them; the newer term amargue, on the other hand, had no such historical resonances and evoked an unhappy state of mind.
Bachata is a form of music and dance that originated in the countryside and rural marginal neighborhoods of the Dominican Republic.

Many doble sentido bachatas are very straightforward both melodically and harmonically, taking their cue from songs like Blas’ “El huevero”; in 1986 he recorded “El motorcito”, the first bachata in the new style to use an electric guitar, and in 1987 modern bachata was born with Blas’ release of “Consejo a las mujeres”.
The song was in fact not a bachata at all, but a merengue, and Durán sang it with an energy and confidence which was very much in contrast with the other bachateros of the period (although Durán himself had always had a brash style).

Although bachata developed out of, and bachateros play, a variety of different rhythms, notably including merengue, the music which is specifically called bachata is a variant of the bolero.
The guitar and guitar music like bolero and son were also the staples of the campo, the countryside, and with the death of dictator Rafael Trujillo in 1961 a number of musicians left the campo to record in the capital.
The word bachata originally denoted an informal party where guitar music was generally played—only later did it come to signify the music itself, and then in a denigrating manner.
