Bachem Ba 349 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bachem Ba 349 Natter ("Colubrid") was a WWII era German experimental rocket-powered interceptor aircraft which was to be employed in a very similar way as surface-to-air missiles.
The pilot's primary mission was to aim the aircraft at its target bomber and fire its armament of rockets, with the majority of the flight to the bombers being radio controlled from the ground, and landing under a parachute.
Two Ba 349s are still existent—one at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Washington, D.C., and one at the Deutsches Museum, Munich, Germany.

The Bachem Ba 349 Natter (Viper), a semi-expendable, vertically-launched, piloted missile, was one of the several desperate yet ingenious measures improvised to defend the German skies.
The Ba 349 was built using bonded and screwed wooden parts, a simple metal structure and armored cockpit.
Bachem proposed that, as American bombers approached their target, the Ba 349 would be sent soaring vertically through the formation.

It is safe to assume that the Bachem Ba 349A Natter was a bad idea from the start and as a bomber interceptor, it was a total failure.

Possibly the oddest plane to ever fly, the Bachem Ba 349 Natter (Viper) is more properly thought of as a manned SAM.
The front runner for the design was initially a Heinkel[?] design that took off from a rail and landed on a skid like the Me 163 Komet.
Erich Bachem's BP20 was a warmed-over design from when he worked at Fieseler, but considerably more radical than the other offerings.

 Bachem Ba.349
The Bachem Ba.349 "Natter" was a small piloted interceptor, launched from a vertical ramp.
However, a new proposal was pushed forward by its designer Erich Bachem which was a semi-expendable target defence interceptor; half way between the original requirement and a flak missile, Bachem's BP 20 could be deployed in a similar fashion to the "Julia" but was less complex for the pilot.
However, Bachem was convinced of the viability of his design and sought an interview with Heinrich Himmler - the BP 20 was reconsidered within hours, and allocated a high development priority with the official designation Ba.349.

In Germany, in late 1943 to early 1944, high altitude bombing from the Americans and British was gradually destroying the industrial might of the Third Reich, and unless something was done to stop the bombing, the entire ability of Germant to wage war would be cut off.
This did not slow the development, and more inexperienced pilots were strapped into the Ba 349 and launched off into the sky, the lucky ones managing to survive the launch.
A simple ring sight was mounted on the nose of the Ba 349 for aiming.

Built mostly of non strategic material (wood and steel), the Natter was designed to fire a volley of R4M rockets in it's nose and for the pilot to then bail out of his aircraft.
