Contrary to popular belief, the fire of BTO did not rise from the ashes of The Guess Who, at least not directly.
They released their self-titled debut album as BTO in 1972 and the hard-driving rhythms of “Gimme Your Money Please” and what the band termed “heavy metal Prairies-style” in “Don’t Get Yourself In Trouble” were fused with the blues-twinged “Blue Collar” made the album an instant hit.

 Bachman-Turner Overdrive - Not Fragile
BTO prefer to rely on an already familiar formula -- grab a chunky guitar riff, have all four instruments pound it into the ground in unison, add guitar solos and you've got a song.
Yet the group possesses such fine guitarists in Randy Bachman and Blair Thornton, such excellent writers in Bachman and C.F. Turner and such marvelously unrestrained singing in Bachman and Turner that their simplicity becomes a basic guide to what current rock is all about.
BTO have broken through to the Top 40 crowd and they've had the FM'ers since they began, and this set of nine hard driving, easy to listen to, pure rock is easily the best thing they've come up with yet.

Gone was the winsome pining and slightly rebellious edge of the mustachioed Burton Cummings, and absent was the abject mistrust of The Man. The self-referential analysis of Canada-U.S. geo-political discourse, as typified in "American Woman," was left behind in the Guess Who's sunburnt dust.
BTO took the roll out of rock and packaged it in a drag-strip-ready, nuts-and-bolts package that sold tons of records (and later, a host of Time-Life retrospective packages).
