Bachman Turner Overdrive's origins can be traced back to the substantial commercial achievements of The Guess Who in the late 60s.
Randy Bachman was a prominent member of that band but left in 1970 when his Mormon beliefs began to rankle at the excesses of a touring rock and roll band.

Bachman had been slugging it out for 10 years by the time the band struck gold with #1 hits like "These Eyes", "Laughing" and "American Woman" and decided to leave the group while they were on top.
By the fourth album, 'Four Wheel Drive' BTO were international superstars and this album too proved to be a monster, peaking at #5 on Billboard, becoming certified platinum, and providing another catchy radio anthem in "Hey You".
The line-up consisting of Rob Bachman, CF Turner, Blair Thornton and Randy Murray still plays live, mostly in festival situations and the band finally made it back into the studio to record another album with 1996's 'Trial By Fire', consisting of 5 new tracks and a handful of re-recorded BTO classics.

The BTO formula is one of simplicity combined with excellence, as the band concentrates first and foremost on pure rock with no frills.
Yet the group possesses such fine guitarists in Randy Bachman and Blair Thornton, such excellent writers in Bachman and C.F. Turner and such marvelously unrestrained singing in Bachman and Turner that their simplicity becomes a basic guide to what current rock is all about.
BTO have broken through to the Top 40 crowd and they've had the FM'ers since they began, and this set of nine hard driving, easy to listen to, pure rock is easily the best thing they've come up with yet.

Randy Bachman left the Guess Who out of frustration with the band's decidedly non-Mormon lifestyle (Bachman himself was a convert), and formed a new band, Brave Belt, with fellow Canadian Chad Allan and Randy's brother Robbie (on drums).
Their new name was inspired by the truckers' magazine Overdrive; Bachman-Turner Overdrive, the record formerly turned down by every record company they sent it to, was released in 1973 and did fairly well: it stayed on the charts for 68 weeks.
All the other tunes were written by Randy Bachman, reportedly because the other members of the band did not feel they had any songs good enough for recording; and all but Freeways were sung by Randy Bachman; C.F. Turner refused to have his photo taken head on for the cover.
