Back River, 974 km long, rises in Contwoyto Lake, north of GREAT SLAVE LAKE, NWT, and flows northeast across the Barren Lands of Nunavut to Chantrey Inlet, south of King William Island.
The river is turbulent in its upper course, but as it enters a broad plain, it widens to form Lakes Pelly, Garry, Upper Macdougall and Lower Macdougall.
The river is named for Sir George BACK, who first explored it in 1834.

Back River (Thlewechodyeth, or Great Fish River), is a river in the Kitikmeot Region of Canada's Nunavut territory and flows for 1,150 kilometres (715 miles).
The area around the river is full of wildlife, with many fish in the river, and caribou, muskoxen, wolves in the area, with occasional sightings of brown (grizzly) bears, wolverines and arctic hares.
As the river nears the Arctic Ocean polar bears are also found, and bear repellent spray is recommended as a protection against all bears.

The Back River Lightstation formerly stood on a windswept beach at the mouth of the river.

The Back River Cemetery, established in 1867, is one of the first Jewish cemeteries in Montreal and amongst the oldest in Canada.
Many of these graves date back to the latter part of the 19th Century; the Back River Cemetery is part of Montreal's Jewish heritage.
