Back rank mate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
At higher levels of play, though the mate itself does not occur very often, play is often affected by the possibility of it - the fact that a player has to spend time guarding against the mate may leave him vulnerable to other tactical ideas.
Back rank mates are often guarded against simply by virtue of a friendly rook or queen protecting the back rank.
Back rank threats can be guarded against more permanently by moving one of the pawns in front of the king to give the king a flight square (such a move is sometimes said to "give the king some luft").

Mating Pattern and Mating Net: Pattern recognition that the key square is the f1 square because the King is located on the back rank, blocked in by White's three pawns.
The principle of forcing the opposing King to one of the sides or corners of the chessboard to effectuate checkmate is, perhaps, the most common of all the mating patterns and mating nets and the one most frequently encountered from simple checkmates to complex checkmates.

Pawns may suddenly appear on the seventh rank and promote to queen on their next move, checkmates may be accomplished via an overwhelming combination of pieces, etc. A win is accomplished by checkmating first on either board, or by winning on time (one of the opponent's flags falls first).
Insufficient mating material is generally considered to include a lone king, a king and a bishop, a king and a knight, or, in most cases, a king and two knights.
Two knights may constitute sufficient mating material in situations where the defending side has at least one pawn, or where there is a forced mate on the board; otherwise the position is likely to be a draw either via stalemate, three-move repetition of position or the 50-move rule.
