essays & effluvia: Back to the Future timeline
The popularity of the Back to the Future film trilogy is due in part to the detailed and believable local history of the fictitious city of Hill Valley and the genealogies of its residents.
According to Doctor Emmett Brown in Back to the Future Part II, whenever a time-traveler alters key events occurring in the past or future, they effectively bring an alternate timeline into existence at their point-of-entry, and their original timeline is erased, even though its events are not forgotten by the time-traveler.
This is the key timeline brought into existence when Doc and Marty arrive in 1955 to relieve Biff of his newly acquired almanac from the future, thus preventing Timeline 4 and Timeline 5 from coming into existence, but without disturbing Timeline 2 as Marty has previously accomplished.

The Back To The Future Trilogy On VCD
The picture quality on “Back To The Future” is poor with a lot of compression grain and a transfer that looks as though it was mastered from a bad VHS tape.
“Back To The Future Part II” is a bit better with a resolution that roughly equals VHS and not surprisingly “Back To The Future Part III” looks the best since it is the most recent, but the quality on this one could have been better as well.

 New film updates time-travel tales - Science - MSNBC.com
“Timeline,” WHICH was adapted from Michael Crichton’s 1999 novel and opens Wednesday at theaters nationwide, is based on the premise that a Bill Gatesish techno-whiz has developed a machine capable of sending people back to 14th-century France.
Explaining how the rules of time travel apply in the world of “Timeline” would give away the story, but suffice it to say that Nahin was generally satisfied with the way Crichton handled the issues in the book, and intrigued to hear about some extra twists that set up the movie’s ending.
There are a couple of plot developments in “Timeline” that Nahin might quibble with, but nothing to compare with “Timecop,” the history-twisting tale that he ranks among the world’s worst time-travel movies.

Clara lives on in this timeline and errects the tombstone and has inscribed on it "Erected in eternal memory by his beloved Clara", this is the tombstone Marty finds in 1955 and takes a photo of....I'll get to what the ravine is called later as there are various possiblities.
This timeline is a mix of the first 2.
The only way Marty would know what the ravine was called AFTER Doc saved Clara would be to time travel to a point AFTER these events but before the train crash at the end of the film...but he does not, so he keeps his original memory of the ravine.

Temporal Anomalies in Back to the Future Part III
It is also apparently not the second timeline: had Clara fallen into the ravine in the second timeline, she would not have been able to erect a tombstone for Doc.
Although it is colorful to imagine that he rescues her dramatically as we see in the movie, it is far more likely that he meets her at the station, preventing her from driving the horses to town, being spooked by the snake and carried off the cliff.
In the second major timeline, the only things which are different which matter to us is that there is a tombstone for Doc Brown not far from the cave in which the time machine is hidden, and that Clayton Ravine does not have that name.
