Back-story - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In narratology, a back-story (also back story or backstory) is the history behind the situation extant at the start of the main story.
The dramatic revelation of secrets from the backstory is a useful term for forming the story, recommended as far back as Aristotle's Poetics.
That backstory became the source of a prequel trilogy of movies and the Expanded Universe.

 MCRW Article: Backstory without Boredom
Common backstory methods, in order of editorial acceptability, include: weaving the backstory into the fabric of the novel, using a prologue, and using the early chapters to convey the past.
Longest — A novel that consists almost entirely of backstory is called a "frame story" and the reader avoids confusion because only the beginning and the end deal with the present.
Rather than weaving backstory into dialog or moments of introspection, she opens every chapter, starting in Chapter 2, with two to three pages of backstory.

Character, setting, plot, and backstory are topics I expect to return to again and again, and I hope these initial five weeks of discussion will be a useful foundation.
Some of this backstory — for example, Hamlet’s loving relationship with his father — is only implied, but other events — such as the murder scene — are described explicitly through dialogue.
Presenting backstory through dialogue means letting your characters reveal the past through their own speech within the story.

What's Your Backstory? - Public Relations and Publicity Blog
Backstories are the "story behind the headline", the history, the background, or even the anecdotes that give life to an otherwise dry story.
But the best way we've found to get backstories run is to pitch the reporter while they are in the middle of working with you on a main story.
And finally - keep in mind that backstories are even less promotional than normal stories (which can only be minimally so.) These are opportunities for you to build your recognition level with the community.

 Backstory Problems
But by laying out the backstory, those preceding events that motivate the characters, the writer might be wasting a powerful tool in creating plot suspense and character conflict.
They learn much more about who this character is from what he remembers of his past (his mother's prayers) and how he currently interprets it (he has abandoned prayer himself) than from a long list of biographical details.
If backstory is important to the story, that importance should be demonstrated within the story, not merely by some authorial comment on top of the opening scene.

 Backstory
Those of you who know me have long ago figured out that I'm having a hard time bouncing back from the art retreat - and I touched on it superficially in the Artsy Asylum blog.
The simple answer is that there was already so much going on in the Artsy Asylum it seemed the logical thing to take the conversation off of there and not complicate an already "busy" appearance.
So I hit on the "backstory" idea which seemed apt given that the illnesses we deal with are generally invisible and thus in the background and some of our issues involve backs.

Auletta, whose previous books include Greed and Glory on Wall Street and World War 3.0, is concerned about how the publishing industry affects the practice of journalism, in theory not beholden to profits and losses.
Most critics agree that Backstory is a provocative if uneven collection that shows a serious understanding of the trade.
Backstory does have the ironic virtue of freezing for all time some of the ephemeral visions of the brief dot-com era.

"Backstory" Buffy the Vampire Slayer (2002)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The primary flaw is in the inability of this Backstory to get creator Joss Whedon on camera.
Then again, given Whedon's history with some of those who actually were interviewed (including "Buffy" the movie's director, Fran Rubel Kuzui and dyspeptic star Donald Sutherland), perhaps it was completely unworkable.
