Topic: Backbeat movie

In the News (Wed 23 Dec 09)

The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: Backbeat: Collector's Edition
The narrative is hermetically sealed within the little-known but seminal time before the Beatles became the Fab Four, from the band's early days barely getting by as inchoate rock-and-roll rebels to just before their pop-chart success preceding the 1964 debut on American television that changed the orbit of the planet.
However, this is not "a Beatles movie." Instead it's an intimate love story that strums the power chords between John Lennon (Ian Hart), his best friend Stuart Sutcliffe (Stephen Dorff), and Astrid Kirchherr (Sheryl Lee), the lovely German photographer who first captured the Beatles on film and helped shape their image and avant-garde explorations.
Backbeat is not a "biopic" or an attempt at a history lesson.

 Backbeat
If you forget for a moment that the movie is about the Beatles, and pretend that it's a fictional story about five guys named Schlubb, there's really no solid reason to watch it, although it still has good points.
Backbeat (1993) is a biopic of Stuart Sutcliffe, one of the five members of the original group that eventually became the Beatles.
means the movie is not good enough to win you over if you hate the genre, but is good enough to do so if you have an open mind about this type of film.

 Backbeat: Collector's Edition (1994)
Through the movie, we constantly are told of Sutcliffe’s inadequacy as a bassist, but you won’t get that impression from the recorded material.
This was a movie closely connected to music, however, so those flaws and the general lack of ambition led me to give the audio a “C”.
It runs 28 minutes and 28 seconds as he covers his inspirations to make the movie, the film’s focus and storytelling choices, casting and the actors’ work, the music, reactions to the flick, and general impressions of making the piece.

Backbeat: Collector's Edition - The Hollywood News
Sutcliffe’s story is at the core of 1993’s Backbeat, a look at his tale as well as that of the early Beatles.
Backbeat does use songs the band commonly performed, and even though the majority of the numbers come from re-recordings, we do hear the real Beatles at one point.
Backbeat lost points due to the problematic execution of the audio.

 SPLICEDwire | "Backbeat" review
I went into "Backbeat" with high hopes -- the Beatles story from a totally different perspective should make for a good movie -- but there are just too many problems for the film to see its potential.
The movie is full of moments that inspire a silent "Yeah, right," like when Astrid first comes into a club the Beatles are playing she and Stuart stare at each other longingly, unhindered by the fact that the lights are low and Stuart is wearing sunglasses.
Also, the movie is being targeted at the MTV crowd, but assumes a working knowledge of Beatles history and leaves out details many college-aged kids won't know.

There are two new English-language art films in town, both concentrating on obsessive relationships, one set against the backdrop of the Beatles in the band's early days, and the other about disenfranchised souls who become too dependent on each other.
"Backbeat" is rated R for profanity, vulgarity, sex, nudity, violence and drugs.
Most of the rest of this very long movie (two hours, 19 minutes) has Oscar relating to Nigel the sordid story of his life with Mimi, in vividly descriptive sexual detail: A failed writer in Paris, Oscar meets and becomes obsessed with Mimi, as their affair becomes more kinky and dangerous.

 Backbeat - Movie Review
Backbeat provides it, traveling back in time to the earliest days of the ‘60s, when the Fab Four were a starving band of outsiders living a fun but also fairly hellish life on the mean streets of Hamburg.
Less than a year later, of course, the Beatles, with Best gone and Ringo in tow, are on their way to unimaginable fame, while nothing is left of Stu but a few rooms full of abstract canvases and a portfolio of photographs of him taken by his girlfriend.
Backbeat is a tragedy for sure, but it’s a tragedy with one hell of a soundtrack.

Needless to say, This movie is about Stuart Sutcliffe who is a member of Beatles in the begining and short time but influenced very much on their fashon and appearance.
"Backbeat" is an excellent portrayal of the Hamburg phase of the early Beatles, and succeeds on every level.
In all, "Backbeat" is an entertaining journey through the world of the early Beatles, and is well worth purchasing for repeat viewings.

There's no doubt in my mind that 'Backbeat' is the best movie ever made about the Beatles.
The musical performances are fine, too, done by a band including Mike Mills of R.E.M. No Beatle originals are used in the movie but that's OK because at the time they were mostly playing powerful cover versions of American rock and soul.
This movie is a triumph for all involved and even though it's not "official" it will only add to the great legacy left by the Beatles.

 Backbeat (1994) Movie Review
Writer and director Iain Softley was able to do that with his 1994 film Backbeat by telling the story of the early days of the Beatles in a way that the Fab Four are only supporting characters in their own saga.
Sadly, it turned out that he would not have had the chance to become a part of the band's stardom, anyway, but that just adds to the dramatic effect of the story.
In fact, after a decade of subpar work in really bad films since this movie was released it is refreshing to remember he actually is a talented actor.

Movieman's Guide to the Movies - Backbeat (1994) - Special Edition
Backbeat tells the story of what many call the "Fifth Beatle," Stuart Sutcliffe (played by a very young Stephen Dorff) and his relationship with his best friend John Lennon (Ian Hart) and his new love Astrid Kirchherr (Sheryl Lee).
This is a very fascinating film to watch because everyone knows about The Beatles and their massive success, but people know little about Sutcliffe and the integral part he had in the formation and foundation of the legendary group.
Overall, die-hard Beatles fans as well as moderate Beatles fans (like me) are sure to enjoy this Collectors Edition DVD of Backbeat for its good performances, lively musical sequences and the very interesting story behind the group before they became international icons.

 Backbeat Movie Discussion
The movie is really about their original bass player Stu Sutcliffe, a proto-punk rocker and artist.
He died at the age of 21 as the Beatles band was adapting their style from the raw heavy rock to mainstream pop rock.
I watch the movie for this aspect, although for the average movie goer, the storyline about original bassist Stu Sutcliffe and photographer Astrid getting together, with John getting jealous, should hold them in between the recreated concert scenes.

 :: rogerebert.com :: Reviews :: Backbeat (xhtml)
There is a lot more to the story than that, of course, and "Backbeat" makes the most of it.
The story of the early days of the Beatles is the stuff of folklore; how they discovered their sound in the smoky dives of Hamburg, how the producer George Martin masterminded their early great records, how they become the most famous performers in the world, almost overnight.
Well, unless the filmmakers had brought their own imaginations to the material, and seen something valid and original in the story of five young men in a rock band, trying to break loose from the crowd, while one of them thinks he would rather be a painter.

For the unfamiliar, Backbeat is an entertaining gem of a film that will fill you in on a piece of pop music history.
I can't say how much non-Beatles fans might care for this movie, but being that I don't think a whole lot of them exist, this is probably one I can recommend with minimal reservation.
Backbeat works because it captures the essence of a soon-to-be pop phenomenon in their pre-Fab days, as well as bring to life a part of the story many might not have been familiar with.

Backbeat: Special Edition, starring Ian Hart, Stephen Dorff (Film - Movie Review)
Crafting a movie about the Fab Four is undoubtedly a daunting task, especially considering that director Richard Lester did such an exquisite job of capturing the early days of Beatlemania in his masterpiece A Hard Day’s Night, which placed the group itself in a starring role.
Despite a convincing bit of acting by Sheryl Lee, the script only partially develops Kirchherr’s persona, and for such a pivotal role to be handled via a series of fleeting, cliché-riddled snapshots serves to undermine some of the tension necessary for making the movie an unmitigated success.
Through several interviews, including a full-length commentary with director Softley as well as a brief segment with Kirchherr herself, the impetus for the film is further revealed, but it’s Hart and Dorff that truly make the picture worth viewing.

Iain Softley's movie tells the story of Stuart Sutcliffe (Stephen Dorff), who was John Lennon's best friend at the Liverpool College of Art and, for a short time, the bass player of the Beatles.
In the period that the screenplay covers-roughly, from August, 1960, when the group played its first night-club gig in Hamburg, to April, 1962, when Sutcliffe dies of a brain hemorrhage-the Beatles were unambiguously John Lennon's band.

And might have remained history, or at least a bizarre little historical footnote, if not for "Backbeat," a wonderful film that focuses on the Sutcliffe/Kirchherr story but in the process fleshes out the Beatles' early, crazy days.

But what comes through in "Backbeat," along with the amphetamine-fueled adrenalin of Hamburg, is confusion, bruised feelings and the dawning understanding that life isn't just fun and games -- and neither is rock 'n' roll.

Instead, Woolley and his screenwriters (Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who wrote the last two Bond movies and "Johnny English") press their case that Brian was murdered, dramatizing the climactic event with sudden conviction.
(The same can't be said for the terrific 1994 early-Beatles movie "Backbeat," which Woolley produced.) Instead of Jagger-Richards classics, the soundtrack bulges with cuts by Robert Johnson, and that makes sense: Brian was the blues-freak purist of the Stones.
The songs are mere ornaments, though, and you never sense how they speak to the man at the center of this movie.
