Backdraft (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Backdraft is an American movie released in 1991, directed by Ron Howard and written by Gregory Widen.
While there are not many movies devoted to firefighters, Backdraft has been criticised for some unrealistic elements, especially for depicting fire as sentient and for the firefighting tactics and improper use of safety equipment and procedures.
The film is the basis of an attraction at Universal Studios Theme Parks where visitors can learn how the pyrotechnic effects were created and experience some of them first hand.

 DVD Review: Backdraft
VIDEO: "Backdraft" was both of one of the earliest titles that was released to the format, as well as one of the first titles to be released by Universal Studios.
Although the film maybe isn't quite as solid an audio experience as if it had been made recently instead of 9 years ago, but I found the action sequences to be remarkably good at enveloping the viewer in the midst of the chaos.
"Backdraft" is a good movie, and although the picture quality is so-so, the sound quality is really solid during the action sequences.

These films relate to firefighting in that they portray people who put their lives on the line to do a job and complete a mission.

Backdraft is a film that was made by Ron Howard back in 1991, in his attempt to show what it was like to be a Chicago fire-fighter of the time.
This was a groundbreaking film when it came to depicting fires, and how they were fought, and Howard does a great job of both showing how difficult it is to be a fireman, and at the same time paying homage to these people who risk their lives for us on a daily basis.
Backdraft is a film that I highly recommend, and it is one of those strong films that you can see again and again.

Barrett does better; her character is a little more interesting than the usual stock cliché, but it’s not enough to lift the film to the point where you really care all that much.
The film also criminally wastes latino heart-throb Jay Hernandez (crazy/beautiful), to the point where you suspect that he had a sub-plot that ended up on the cutting room floor.
With a film this clichéd, there is a certain amount of fun to be had in trying to guess which character is going to get horribly burned, which one’s going to die, which one’s going to end up in a fist fight with the hero, and so on.

CAPSULE REVIEW –– BACKDRAFT is one of the most visually powerful, yet emotionally empty films made about the heroism of the firefighting profession.
The film's main problem is with the script which tries too hard to incorporate every aspect of this tireless job.
The film works best when it centers on the firemen and their relationships with each other, the dangers of their job and how they manage to get out there everyday to tame this beast.

While Ron Howard’s “Backdraft” is still top of the pops when it comes to firefighting movies, “Ladder 49” benefits immensely by taking a more working class look at the vocation.
Ron Howard’s 1991 epic “Backdraft” is usually considered the final word in firefighting movies, with its gushing fountains of respect for the profession and a distinct cinematic style, which violently thrust the viewer into the middle of the inferno.
Jay Russell’s “Ladder 49” owes a great debt to Howard’s film in tone and thirst to idolize the firefighting characters, but Russell’s movie isn’t interested in stylish cinema; it wants to bring the experience of fighting fires down to the level of the average filmgoer.

I have a lot of contempt for this film because it has a lot of contempt for its audience: call it the self-defense school of taking aim at a piece of crap, or a losing battle to save the folks sobbing loudly into their hankies when the lights come up.
In its insidious way, Ladder 49 is as dangerous as other middlebrow epics like Radio and The Other Sister, pictures in which edgeless noble savages teach us through their selfless examples about life and about what it means to avoid real responsibility and community involvement.
It's propaganda at its chest-poundingest, with Robbie Robertson subbing for Bruce Hornsby and a score by William Ross that is entirely indistinguishable from one by James Horner.

In truth, "Ladder 49" isn't 1/49th the flick "Backdraft" was; it is at least 48 rungs short of measuring up to Ron Howard's tribute to the profession, which offered genuine laughs, fully developed characters, real drama, a little mystery (even if it was somewhat predictable), and superior action sequences.
The latter is truly a shame when you consider that "Backdraft" is almost 15 years old, predating even the most rudimentary CGI capabilities.

Backdraft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A backdraft is a situation which can occur when a fire is starved of oxygen; consequently combustion ceases but the fuel gases and smoke remain at high temperature.
The most common tactic used by firefighters in defusing a potential backdraft is to ventilate from the highest point, allowing the heat and smoke to escape without igniting explosively.
