When the two gears come into contact an impact occurs, resulting in increased wear to the gear train, and resulting in a disturbance that can affect the rest of the robotic structure.
Backlash will also occur when the primary gear reverses direction, as the secondary gear is now wound up in the wrong direction.
However, careful design and manufacture can reduce the effects of backlash within a transmission, and certain types of gear trains (such as epicyclic gear trains) produce significantly less backlash.

Gear - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Different-sized gears are often used in pairs for a mechanical advantage, allowing the torque of the driving gear to produce a larger torque in the driven gear at lower speed, or a smaller torque at higher speed.
A disadvantage of helical gears is a resultant thrust along the axis of the gear, which needs to be accommodated by appropriate thrust bearings, and a greater degree of sliding friction between the meshing teeth, often addressed with specific additives in the lubricant.
A crown gear or contrate gear is a special form of bevel gear which has teeth at right angles to the plane of the wheel; it meshes with a straight cut spur gear or pinion on a right-angled axis to its own, or with an escapement such as found in mechanical clocks.

Backlash (gear) -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Backlash is the amount of clearance between mated (A toothed wheel that engages another toothed mechanism in order to change the speed or direction of transmitted motion) gear teeth in a gear pair.
Some backlash is required to allow for (An application of a lubricant to something) lubrication, manufacturing errors, (The property of being bent or deflected) deflection under load and differential expansion between the gears and the housing.
One half of the gear is fixed to its shaft while the other half of the gear is allowed to turn on the shaft, but pre-loaded in rotation by small (A spring in the shape of a coil) coil spring s that rotate the free gear relative to the fixed gear.

Backlash is created when the tooth thickness of either gear is less than the tooth thickness of an ideal gear, or the zero backlash tooth thickness.
Additional backlash is created when the operating center distance of the gear pair is less than that for two ideal gears.
One half of the gear is fixed to its shaft while the other half of the gear is allowed to turn on the shaft, but pre_loaded in rotation by small coil springs that rotate the free gear relative to the fixed gear.

Backlash is the amount of clearance between mated gear teeth in a gear pair.

 Pitch Line Runout
Backlash is the endplay between the gear teeth as the gear sets rotate relative to one another.
Backlash variation can be detected by measuring the backlash of the ring gear on every tooth around the gear.
If the ring gear backlash is within specifications AND varies by more than 0.002” from the lowest to the highest backlash, then it is excessive and the differential case should be checked for excessive lateral and radial runout.

 Backlash Adjustment on Sherline Tools
Therefore, backlash is not considered a "fault" with a machine tool but rather is simply a factor that must be kept properly adjusted and accommodated for in your use of the machine.
Backlash on the "X" and "Y" axes of the mill may be reduced to a minimum by adjustment on the anti-backlash nuts.
Because the mounting hole for the locking gear had to be moved slightly farther from the backlash gear to accommodate its larger size, the new system cannot be retrofitted to the old pointer style lock.

How to remove backlash from worm gear systems: News from Holroyd
Backlash is the enemy of precision in high accuracy worm gearing systems, but there is a solution, says Steve Whitehead, director of precision gear sales for Holroyd.
In practice the gears are manufactured so that the initial backlash is achieved at a certain distance relative to a datum plane on the worm.
When fixing the centre distance and gear data, the load capacity of the wormgear set should be such as to provide an adequate gear life with a Iow rate of wear with only very occasional need for backlash adjustment.

Pinion depth is indicated by the position of the pattern between the face and flank of the ring gear teeth.
Backlash must be kept within specifications, and will therefore only slightly affect the pattern between the heel and toe of the ring gear teeth.

Mopar Rear End Gears Set Up - Ring Preload - Mopar Muscle Magazine
Backlash is the play between the ring and pinion--the slop felt when the ring gear is rocked back and forth with the pinion held so it's not moveable.
Measuring backlash is simple: Rig a dial indicator against one of the teeth in the ring gear, and rock the ring to see how much free-play is recorded.
As stated, setting up gears without the special tools for measuring pinion depth generally requires a full assembly and then a check of the gear-mesh pattern to determine if the pinion depth is correct.

Modeling & Analysis of a Printing Line Coating Section
The purpose of the modeling and investigation was to observe the effect of backlash on the observed registration error in the coater, with the existing control scheme.
This indicates that backlash will be a significant problem in terms of tuning the speed regulator for tracking a speed reference, however, a hidden benefit is that the surface speed of the blanket roll will not deviate as much as the impression roll, given the same magnitude of a given load disturbance.
To alleviate this as a possible source of contention between the desire to regulate good surface speed, and compensate for gear backlash, the mechanical configuration should be looked at, with the aim in mind of removing backlash from the drive-trains.

Andrews Products - CAM GEAR NOISE (EV 80 and SHOVEL 74 & 80)
If more than.002 inches (.005mm) backlash is present between the cam and pinion gear, the directional change of force will result in an audible "click" as the backlash moves from the back side of each gear tooth to the front side.
While some positive backlash is necessary to prevent localized gear tooth overloads, excess backlash (and "clicking") may sound annoying but won't hurt anything.
By choosing two gears which are compatible sizes for a given engine, gear backlash can be minimized so that gears will not whine or click but just run quietly.

In particular, backlash and lost motion are often erroneously believed to be synonymous in describing the relative motion of the gearhead output position in relation to the input movement.
Backlash, which is sometimes termed slop, lash, free-play, or simply play, is an angular quantity due to the gear's circular geometry.
Backlash, or lost motion, is not an issue in the case of continuous single direction motion.
