One reason is that the backmasking messages all seem to have a spiritual message to them.

Styx and Prince would later put deliberate backmasking in a couple of their songs to poke fun at the controversy.
Heavy rock act Korn used backmasking in their interlude track "Am I Going Crazy" from their fourth album "Issues." When listened to forwards it is a short track less than a minute in length without any of the distorted guitars or heavy drumming typical of the band.

Now recently studying backmasking i realised it could be a backwards message.

I have heard confirmations (from my college roommate who was a metal head) of Hotel California, songs by Beatles and many heavy metal bands like KISS that supposedly had satanic verses (okay an unneeded plug for Rushdie here) in their songs when backmasked.
