He was becoming good at his "work" and though he had for years eluded police, it is as though the two German backpackers were left uncovered and in a sitting position against fallen logs in the forest as a sort of tease for police.
Before the discovery of Anja's body, police knew that the murderer's modus operandi for death was by shooting and stabbing (though there is also evidence that he strangled at least one of his victims).
This evidence does suggest that she too may have been sexually assaulted but unfortunately due to the time lapse of almost two years between her murder and the discovery of her body, there is not enough evidence for forensics to be one hundred percent sure.

The film has left a mark on me. It is not saying "hey, dont backpack or drive through the outback of Australia, you might get killed", but it uses their story to provide a backdrop for a film to tell a story.
Falconio was the only backpacker killed in the outback, and the evidence indicates he was shot and not tortured.

If anything, it is more similar to the Belanglo State Forest Backpacker Murders.
If this film can get away with pretending it’s based on true events, then any film ever made that has a murder in it can claim to be based on a true story because murders have occurred at some points in human history.
By that logic, Battlefield: Earth is based on a true story because there have been wars on this planet at some stages of human history.
