Backspace - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Backspace is the keyboard key that originally pushed the typewriter carriage one position backwards, and in modern computer displays moves the cursor one position backwards and deletes the preceding character no matter what the character is.
Terminals which do not have the backspace code mapped to the function of moving the cursor backwards and deleting the preceding character would display the symbols ^H (caret, H) when the backspace key was pressed.
In a mainframe environment, to backspace means to move a magnetic tape backwards, typically to the previous block.

 Backspace
Backspace is measured from the far back edge of the rim shell to the back side of the center disc.
The wheel size, style and center will dictate the backspace limits (the least and most backspace that can be obtained).
Note: Large backspace requests can reduce clearance and cause caliper interference, as the hub/rotor may move into the small diameter area (dropwell) of the rim shell.

The BACKSPACE statement moves the position of a file opened for sequential access to the beginning of the current record.
If the BACKSPACE statement causes the implicit writing of an endfile record, the file is positioned before the record that precedes the endfile record.
Backspacing a file that is connected but does not exist is prohibited.

 Wheel Backspace
Measure from the bottom of the straightedge to the center of the wheel (where the wheel is bolted to the brake drum or front hub).
Backspace is important as a measure on its own (too much backspace can lead to a wheel rubbing on suspension pieces or brake lines), but it's also important as a percentage of the total rim width.
Two rims of the same nominal width but with different backspace dimensions will appear quite different on the car - the one with least backspace will yield the widest track because it will "stick out" further from the car's centerline.

Kermit FAQ - The Backspace Key
Nondestructive backspacing is usually done with the Left Arrow key, discussed elsewhere.
To cause a destructive backspace operation, the terminal must send an appropriate code to the host, and the host must reply with appropriate terminal-specific codes to move the terminal's cursor and remove the unwanted character.
The first step in making your Backspace key behave as expected is to choose a terminal emulation in Kermit that is appropriate for the computer you are connecting to, and then (if necessary) tell your host what kind of terminal Kermit is emulating.

#1662: BackSpace and Delete keys with Wabi
A: Nowadays three different "move left" functions are provided by most applications: Erase (Destructive Backspace) removes the char to the left of cursor and shifts the rest of the line left to fill the gap.
Whenever their documentation refers to the Backspace key, you'll have to translate since you're using a key labelled Delete for that function.
The destructive backspace function is called "erase" and may be mapped to one of many different key events, for example `stty erase ^?`.

Fixing the Backspace/Ruboff key in Linux's Xterm and Emacs
This key is typically called the backspace key, neutrally known as the ruboff key.
If that is different than what backspace sends, any program that gets its information from they stty settings will not recognize backspace as delete left.
So if your backspace sends '^?' and stty shows "erase = ^H" then a program that reads the erase value is not going to know what to do with '^?'.

Linux.com - The Linux keyboard and console HOWTO: Delete and Backspace
That doesn't mean that you have to setup keys so that Backspace generates DEL. But if it doesn't then it is easiest to remap them at the lowest possible level in emacs.
Note that under X emacs can distinguish between Ctrl-h and the Backspace key (regardless of what codes these produce on the console), and by default emacs will view the Backspace key as DEL (and do deletion things, as bound to that character, rather than help things, bound to Ctrl-H).
When people have problems with backspace, they tend to look at their termcap (or terminfo) entry for the terminal, and indeed, there does exist a kb (or kbs) capability describing the code generated by the Backspace key.

Kermit FAQ - My Backspace Key Doesn't Work!
The terminal emulator, Kermit or otherwise (including Telemate -- if its backspace key works for you in all circumstances, I think that's just a stroke of luck), has no way of knowing what host or application you are using, and therefore no way of knowing what to send when you press the Backspace key.
Of course, Kermit's Backspace key must send *something* "out of the box", so it uses one of the several most likely destructive backspace values, and in fact the one that is defined in ASCII to be destructive backspace, namely Rubout, also known as Delete or DEL, character number 127, which sometimes is displayed as "^?".
The VAX macro sets things up (including the Backspace key) for communicating with VAXes and VAX-like systems, and that means, among other things, setting the Backspace key to send DEL. The IBM macro, on the other hand, is used for communicating with IBM mainframes in linemode, where BS is used.
