Topic: Backstay

  Backstay crane
An estimate of its leverage is given by imagining where the backstay would attach to the mast if the crane were not present, yielding an "effective" mast height.
The reason is that you'll probably want as much backstay tension as possible, so as to obtain as much jibstay tension as possible, while bending the mast as little as possible.
A small detail: to maximise the transfer of the tension in the backstay to the mast, have the crane meet the backstay at a right angle.

  Quantum Tuning Guides - Etchells
Backstay — Once you are on the water and racing, the backstay is the primary tool for depowering the whole sail plan.
You will know you have too much backstay when your sail is "washed out" (very flat) and the mast is "overbending" (diagonal wrinkles on the mainsail from the mid mast to the clew).
The backstay is a very important ongoing adjustment that needs to be used artfully to maximize speed and height.

 The Sprit topmast backstay
As long as a sprit topmast was carried, it was necessary to support this aft, and the sprit topmast backstay served this purpose.
The sprit topmast backstay was attached to the sprit topmast crosstress with a short seized or spliced eye, and ran from there aft between the trestletrees.
With the disappearance of the sprit topmast around 1720 the sprit topmast backstay also vanished, as its function was assumed by the dolphin striker and the martingale stays -although in a quite different way.

 Heavy Air Sailing
Backstay, which flattens the main, opens the main's leech and controls the headstay tension.
The backstay is used to tension the jib wire and remove jib halyard sag.
If the backstay is pulled on too much, the main will invert and develop inversion wrinkles which cannot be pulled out with the cunningham.

As the mast bends the main flattens and the forestay tightens, flattening the jib.
Be sure to modify the backstay adjuster system so that it is led to both sides of the cockpit.
Backstay tension should then be continually applied to control the shape of both the genoa and main.

 Farr 1020 Association
When the backstay load is then applied to bend the mast fore and aft further while sailing, a significant amount of side bend should also appear and when the mast-head backstay is wound fully down, the side bend should be in the region of 30% of the fore and aft bend.
The backstay is used for both bending the mast to flatten the mainsail and also to tension the forestay and reduce forestay sag, thereby flattening the headsail.
As the backstay tension is increased the mainsheet will also generally have to be pulled in harder and if the backstay is eased, so to will the mainsheet to keep the correct amount of twist in the leech of the mainsail.

 Quantum One Design News
Backstays are something that you have watched skipper and crew teams mess with in the past few seasons.
The answer is, backstays are not as important of an item as they used to be.
The biggest thing about the backstays is to have a plan and use that plan all of the time.

As the breeze increases the backstay will need to be tightened as will the jib sheet tension...bring the sail into both the top spreader and the chainplates so it’s 4.
NOTE: If you plan to sail a lot in a windy area and resort to vang sheeting often, it is recommended that you ‘sleeve’ the long J/27 boom internally 3’ aft and 2’ forward of the vang bale as this will help prevent bending or possible breakage.
Notice that the backstay adjuster system is led to both sides of the cockpit so either the Genoa or main trimmer can adjust it for puffs and seas.

Backstay Adjuster   (Site not responding. Last check: )
On the P26 the backstay adjuster is a control for headstay tension.
On the P26 it may be faster overall (better VMG to windward) to ease the backstay a bit and fall off a few degrees for speed.
With the split backstay the adjustment is progressive.

 Backstay Adjusters
On sailboats the backstay adjuster enables the crew to precisely adjust and control the forestay tension.
When not under the sail, the backstay adjuster permits the release of tension on the rig, thereby helping to prolong the life of the rigging and fittings.
Two versions of the smaller size are available - one with a wheel and, another with a folding handle which works like a ratchet for precise and frequent adjustments.

After cutting the spar, the shrouds and backstay may be too long to tension the rig correctly.
Note: Be sure the backstay is loose and there is no tension on the spinnaker and genoa halyard or you may get a false reading.
Backstay- As your shroud tensions are increased or decreased, your backstay turnbuckles should be adjusted accordingly.

 Harken Tech Corner: Backstay Adjusters
On masthead boats, the backstay adjuster is the primary device for changing headstay tension.
On fractionally rigged boats, backstay tension contributes to headstay tension but is used primarily to bend the mast and flatten the mainsail.
Replace the two lower legs of the backstay with flexible cable turned over a large block on the standing section of the stay.

Ullman Sails International Capri 22 Tuning Guide
The backstay is a very critical adjustment as for it also effects the headstay sag and the shape of the headsail.
When the wind builds the backstay needs to be tighten to flatten the mainsail and reduces the amount of headstay sag which also flattens the headsail.
When adjusting the backstay, the Main sheet and the Genoa sheet will need to be adjusted at the same time.

Boston Harbor Sailing Club - Racing
When going to weather and the backstay properly tensioned (see section 8) the luff tension should be not so loose that there are any horizontal wrinkles from the jib snaps and not so tight that there is a vertical wrinkle along the length of the luff.
Backstay tension - Some light backstay tension is required in light conditions to tension the headstay and reduce jib sag.
As the wind increases the backstay must be tensioned to de-power the main when going to weather.

backstay adjuster - SailNet Community   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Backstay adjustment is more important on a cruising boat than a race boat.
On a race boat you have crew to run around and re-tension halyards and sheets in a gust to balance the helm and reduce heeling.
It also allows a setup of the rig with less backstay tension except in heavy going which reduces the strains on the boat and improves light air performance.

The backstay is just tensioned to remove enough sag to keep the jib leech off the spreader and the shroud when the upper batten is angling just at the end of the spreader.
The change in your rake from the backstay pulled on to the backstay relaxed should be 3" to 4".
At the same time that the backstay is applied to depower the main, the Cunningham should be pulled on to maintain the proper draft position.

Kato Marine - Mini Backstay GPS Mount
It has been determined that the angle of a sailboats' backstay really does not vary that much relative to the sailboats' length.
For this reason, we found it convenient to simply bend the Backstay Antenna Mount main member to the median angle.
Each Backstay Antenna Mount main member is 1/8" thick x 1-1/2" wide for structural strength.

This allows more backstay to be pulled on letting the top of the main twist to leeward, while at the same time placing more tension on the forestay which improves pointing and flattens the genoa.
JRemember the tighter the aft-lowers and backstay are, the tighter the forestay is and therefore the flatter the Genoa.
Tension the backstay in the same manner as in the 13-18 knot conditions, except that 20 degrees of twist is desired.

Sam L. Morse Forums :: BCC Forum :: Backstay Antenna/Windvane Question - Attn Terry Hill
I believe it is possible to use the backstay as an antenna when a backstay windvane is fitted to the boat.
To address your question, I envision several approached to using the backstay as an antenna and pivot point for the windvane: (In all approaches, a split plastic armature is clamped to the backstay where the control wheel and upper strut are fitted.
With this approach, the antenna lead from the turner would have to pass through the 1" O.D. split plastic armature that is clamped to the backstay and serves as a shaft for the 1" I.D. ball bearings.

Scuttlebutt Forum: Discussion: Sailing Forum: wire/spectra backstays
I've a need to put a SSB radio on my boat, and rigging the antenna up to the backstay is the usual thing.
I could just make a spectra backstay and run a piece of small gauge s.s.wire up the backstay or even inside it, but I keep coming back to the 3-part...spectra - wire - spectra idea.
The reasoning against using the backstay itself as the antenna was always that the required insulators created a weak link.

Our adjustment line is easy to use, and is run from the backstay through a pair of triple blocks (one up and one down), around those things a bunch of times, then across the back of the boat to another block, and then forward to our trimmer.
If you move the backstay onto centerline, you will decrease the angle slightly, reducing the clearance you get on the roach of the mainsail.
The problem I am having is remembering to re cleat (what becomes the leeward backstay line) after releasing on the tack (I drive as well as main and backstay so its a busy spot) so that I can adjust from the weather side of the boat.

Atom Voyages | Making a Dipole Antenna
To evaluate the performance of a backstay antenna, you must compare it with an antenna of known performance on the same boat.
In other parts of the band it may not be as effective as the auto-tuned backstay, and is particularly poor at the lowest frequencies used for short range communications.
For an SSB receiver antenna you can use any of the antennas used for a transceiver, such as an insulated backstay, vertical whip or a random length wire hung near the masthead and tied off at the corner of the afterdeck or stern rail and then run under the deck to the radio.
