Topic: Backstitch

Backstitch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Back stitch is a simple embroidery line stitch most commonly used in Cross stitch to outline an area of stitching or to add detail to an embroidered picture but it also has many uses in other types of embroidery and general sewing.
Although superficially similar to Holbein stitch, commonly used in Blackwork embroidery, backstitch differs in the way it is worked, requiring a single journey only to complete a line of stitching.
Backstitch is most easily worked on an even-weave fabric, where the threads can be counted to ensure regularity, and is generally executed from right to left.

A backstitch seam formed by three layers of thread is thick and isn’t flexible.
A backstitch seam and jagged shaping edges are a deadly combination, because as there is no place to put the seam close to the edge a very thick seam results.
Another drawback of backstitch seams is that because they are worked on the wrong side, the resulting seam wanders between the line of adjacent stitches.

The Rocking Horse ~ How To
When there is a backstitch over one or two squares and the symbol is the same on either side of the backstitch, make a full cross stitch in that square.
If the symbols are different on either side of the backstitch or there is a symbol on just one side of the backstitch, this will indicate that 3/4 stitches should be used in the color indicated by the symbol as shown above.
The purpose of the backstitch is to form a continuous line with each stitch touching.
