Bacon's Rebellion was an uprising in 1675-76 of between 500 and 800 Virginia farmers, under the leadership of Nathaniel Bacon (1647-76), against the colonial authorities headed by Sir William Berkeley, governor of Virginia.
Bacon was also aware of the jealous felt by many of his neighbors, toward the lucrative trade in furs and copper, which the Governor of Virginia enjoyed, exclusively, with the Occaneechis.
In 1713, the colony of Virginia signed a treaty of peace with the Occaneechi, and were given a reservation in Brunswick County and a Trading fort called Fort Christianna.

  Bacon's Rebellion
Bacon was a troublemaker and schemer whose father sent him to Virginia in the hope that he would mature.
After Bacon drove the Pamunkeys from their nearby lands in his first action, Berkeley exercised one of the few instances of control over the situation that he was to have, by riding to Bacon's headquarters at Henrico with 300 "well armed" gentlemen.
Bacon would then be relieved of the council seat that he had won for his actions that year, but he was to be given a fair trial for his disobedience.

So: Unless they have "villages" in Virginia (and so far as I know, they don't), what we have here is a flat-out mistake on Lovecraft's part, letting his native New England idiom intrude onto a story about the South.
Jan 8, 2005 2:07:35 PM The issue is not whether there is a government or other database somewhere that, presumably based on population, lists certain communities as villages, nor is it whether there may be state or federal laws or regulations that classify certain communities in those states as villages.
The point is that the inhabitants of these regions (certainly in Oklahoma, and I suspect, in Virginia) do not colloquially use the word "village" to describe such communities.
