Review: Michael Jackson: Invincible - Return of the Scarecrow
Jackson opens the song with growl-like murmur of a tenor, but the song takes off in the second verse when he pushes his range to a breathy lilting falsetto that powerfully captures the vulnerability that the song's lyrics attempt to convey.
By the end of the song, Jackson is in classic closing form as the thin growl becomes more confident and demanding and is juxtaposed to his pleading falsetto.
Co-written by Jackson with Babyface and Carole Bayer Sager, "You Are My Life" so convincingly invokes Jackson's 1972 movie theme "Ben" that one expects to hear the rodent sing-along in the song's weepy chorus.

Gary Westfahl's Bio-Encyclopedia of Science Fiction Film: Michael Jackson
There were early signs of Jackson's interest in the fantastic: his willingness to sing the theme song to the revenge-of-the-intelligent-rats epic, Ben, and his engaging performance as the Scarecrow in an all-black film version of The Wizard of Oz that might have been charming had anyone other than Diana Ross been cast as the lead.
Several of them are fantasies, like “Remember the Time,” depicting Jackson as a magician entertaining an Egyptian pharaoh (played by Eddie MURPHY) and enticing his wife, and “Earth Song,” where a world ravaged by pollution is miraculously restored to its natural beauty by a mighty healing wind.
“Leave Me Alone” (an episode from Moonwalker often shown separately as a video) takes Jackson on an amusement-park ride past various fantastic images, with scenes that visualize tabloid news reports to complement the song's denunciation of the media.
