 Bad Influence
The "doppelganger" aspects of Bad Influence, and the film's many unexpected twists and turns, echo films of Alfred Hitchcock, especially Strangers on a Train.
The film's boldest stroke is to cast the likeable Lowe as the bad guy (albeit a charming one) and the often villainous Spader as the malleable milquetoast.
Enigmatic drifter Alex (Rob Lowe) enters Michael's life and immediately begins to exert a negative influence.

Griffith, and the silent movie "bad girls" portrayed by Theda Bara, both show the continuing influence of Symbolist imagery, as do the Babylonian scenes from Griffith's Intolerance.
Symbolist imagery lived on longest in the horror film; as late as 1932, a horror film such as Carl Theodor Dreyer's Vampyr shows the obvious influence of Symbolist imagery; parts of the film resemble tableau vivant re-creations of the early paintings of Edvard Munch.

 WiG NL Spring 1999
The fear among reformers of film's bad influence was not only that it cultivated a taste for further bad influence (for 'immoral' mass culture), but that it made children/masses unavailable for "good suggestion," which was oriented towards constructing responsible national subjects.
The film reformers concentrated on diagnosing the particular danger which film presented to the moral integrity of Germany as a "Kulturnation" by demonstrating its negative moral impact on children.
The reformers constructed a bridge between the child and the adult viewer via a particular idea of the film audience that was indebted to mass psychology of the late-19th century.

The Problems of the Literary Biopic
And both films were directed by men who contributed, either partially or wholly, to the writing of the script, and who clearly had a decisive authorial influence on the final product.
In late February 1994, Nattevagten opened in Denmark to rave reviews; in March and April it was the country's top film; in September, it premiered in North America at the Toronto Film Festival; and in 1995, the film received numerous awards at festivals and conventions across Europe.
But here for the most part the films in question are already so laden with the conventions of mainstream Hollywood cinema that there is little risk of foreign "contamination." If anything, getting an outsider to direct the latest studio-conceived thriller, action flick, etc., is thought to add something of an "edge" to the production.

 Chicago Reader Movie Review
The film seems to suggest that witchcraft both exists and works, but the uncertainty we continue to have about some events and characters is a mark of Lewton's influence.
The film was produced at RKO by Val Lewton, who'd once been David O. Selznick's story editor and who inspired parts of the producer hero played by Kirk Douglas in Vincente Minnelli's Oscar-worthy The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), an insider's look at Hollywood.
The film feels both cozy and oppressive as it deals frankly with one character's death wish, familial and romantic love, the power of a cult to drive a member toward suicide, the sustaining warmth of a circle of friends, and the seductive allure of both art and oblivion.

One interviewee in the film makes the powerful claim that "punk rock is black music," an idea which eschews mainstream conceptions of punk, but is, of course, completely accurate if one considers punk's roots in rock 'n' roll and the influence of seminal punk bands such as the Bad Brains.
The film shows how black punks encounter conflicting experiences of alienation and racism within the punk scene (which is predominately white and usually predominately male) while at the same time feeling an intense ownership of and empowerment within punk culture.
This film is a powerful testament to the idea that radical cultures such as punk can be and are stronger when they are multiracial and multicultural.

In this film we are offered a representation of an extensive network of missionaries and missions in South America, but we also see true spiritual worth, dignity and success in the attempts by Jesuit priests in converting native Indians to Christianity.
Cardinal Altamirano visits the great Mission of St Miguel, as well as Gabriel’s St Carlos Mission, but still decides that they must be abandoned – a political action already sanctioned to curb Jesuit influence and power in the Americas in order to preserve their status in Europe.

Spader's reputation cemented, he starred in Bad Influence (1990), playing a gullible young businessman opposite manipulative psycho Rob Lowe (in what would earlier have been a Spaderesque turn) and White Palace (also 1990), as a callow preppie who falls for earthy waitress Susan Sarandon.
His feature film debut, in Endless Love (1981), was followed by turns in exploitation pictures such as Tuff Turf (1985) and The New Kids (1985), and TV work including a stint as Robert Mitchum's son in A Killer in the Family (1983).
He starred in Jack's Back (1988, as a possible modern-day Jack the Ripper) and The Rachel Papers (1989), but he really hit his stride as the sexually troubled young man in sex, lies, and videotape (also 1989), for which he won the Best Actor award at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival.

Hanson's next film, 1990's Bad Influence, was also laden with Hitchcock influences, particularly those of Strangers on a Train.
Perhaps underestimating the film's critical appeal, Paramount buried Wonder Boys with a February 2000 release, where it was eclipsed by both late-release Oscar heavies (The Cider House Rules, American Beauty) as well as lighter fare (My Dog Skip, The Whole Nine Yards).

As I started watching "Lemonade Joe" it was clear the film was a Czechoslovakian spoof of Hollywood westerns, with a heavy influence from silent films that were obsessed with tinting.

Depp may have chosen "The Astronaut's Wife" (the first of his three 1999 thrillers) for its opportunity to play good boy-gone wrong under alien influence, but the result was another one-note performance in a film that was not as bad as the studio's failure to screen it for critics had suggested.
Depp made his feature directorial debut with "The Brave" (1997), a film he also co-wrote (with his older brother D P Depp and Paul McCudden) and in which he starred as a father who agrees to play the victim in a snuff film to earn money for his family's well-being.
Depp's subsequent film career has exhibited an unwillingness to settle for standard heartthrob roles and a predilection for distinctive filmmakers and material.
