  'Bad Lieutenant'
When The Lieutenant pulls over a pair of young teenage girls who've taken out Daddy's car without permission and negotiates a sleazy exchange of sexual favors for his silence, we may want to dismiss the picture entirely as a disgusting exercise in sewer diving.
This religious dimension is introduced when The Lieutenant begins an investigation into the rape of a nun in a Spanish Harlem church by two crackheads who, after brutalizing the woman, desecrate her church.
The Lieutenant, who calls himself a Catholic and then, several scenes later, snorts coke off a picture of his child at communion, is raging against God and, at the same time, administering to himself a cruel punishment for his own transgressions.

Bad Lieutenant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bad Lieutenant (1992) is the title of a film crime drama directed by Abel Ferrara and starring Harvey Keitel as the titular "bad lieutenant".
The "Bad Lieutenant" also is a drug-using gambler who finds himself plunged into debt when the New York Mets win the National League Championship Series after trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and former Met Darryl Strawberry 3-0.
The turning point in the film arrives when the Lieutenant investigates the rape of a nun and uses this as a chance to confront his inner demons and perhaps achieve redemption.

As his bad decisions drive him deeper into debt, his life becomes a surreal hell, with a constant intake of crack, coke, heroin, and booze eroding what remains of his sanity.
The film is based on a song written by director Abel Ferrara called "The Bad Lieutenant" that, in turn, is based on an incident in which a nun was raped in Spanish Harlem in 1982.
Abel Ferrara's BAD LIEUTENANT is a bleak character study of a corrupt New York City detective who investigates the rape and torture of a nun even as his own life crumbles around him.

Bad Lieutenant is a fiercely contemporary moral tale examining the issues of faith, morality, responsibility, and culpability in today's world where cynicism is the norm and everything has its price.
The Lieutenant is the scum of the earth, but it is impossible to avert our eyes as his acts of desperation become increasingly heinous; at no point can we sympathize with the Lieutenant's plight, but on some level we can all identify with his pain and desperation.

"Bad Lieutenant" tells the story of a man who is not comfortable inside his body or soul.
He is bad and knows he is bad, and he abuses the power of his position in every way he can.
The movie does not give the lieutenant a name, because the human aspects of individual personality no longer matter at this stage; he is a bad cop, and those two words, expressing his moral state and his leverage in society, say everything that is still important about him.

 Bad Lieutenant Review (1992)
The lead character of Abel Ferrara’s notorious 1992 film is a ‘bad’ policeman in the sense that Ed Wood was a ‘bad’ director or Liz Hurley is a ‘bad’ actress — he’s an absolute disgrace to his profession.
Bad Lieutenant is both one of Abel Ferrara’s best films and his most typical, in that it defines all the elements that can be found elsewhere in his work.
While not as light on plot as, say, The Blackout or New Rose Hotel, Bad Lieutenant is nevertheless another film in which Ferrara puts seamy atmosphere ahead of story, but it remains an admirably uncompromisingly work.

Bad Lieutenant with Harvey Kietel directed by Abel Ferrara(1992)
BAD LIEUTENANT is an unforgettable film, fresh from the sewer-drenched mind of director/writer Ferrara — who brought us the classics MS.
The token mystery of the story involves the rape of a virginal young nun (imagine Bridget Fonda with a better set)...the Lieutenant, in deep to a bookie and in deeper to the drugs that he's selling and pushing into his body, wants to bring the punks responsible for the brutal crime to justice.
Like Kyle MacLachlan's descent into darkness in that vile and violent classic, BAD LIEUTENANT is really about Keitel's attempt to reverse his plummet before he bottoms out completely.

While this heinous crime only serves to strengthen the Lt's belief in the general depravity of the world around him, the nun herself has found solace in her refusal to condemn those who wronged her, viewing them instead as victims as their own confusion and despair.
