Bad News - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bad News are a spoof rock band, created for the Channel 4 television series The Comic Strip Presents...
The episode, Bad News Tour, took the form of a spoof rockumentary, in which the incompetent band is followed on tour by an almost equally incompetent documentary crew.
They also played a tour of universities and polytechnics as well as playing Reading Festival in 1987.They also had a suitably bad opening set at the Monsters of Rock festival at Castle Donington.

Bad News, the parody of a bad heavy metal band, began as a 1983 episode from the Comic Strip, an English comedy troupe whose members numbered three of the four Young Ones (Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmonson, and Nigel Planer) and writer Peter Richardson (other members included Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders).
As a particularly British answer to Spinal Tap, Bad News could barely find the switch on their amp.
The 1983 special came at a creative high point for the Comic Strip team -- it was one of many well-done shows in that season, but time, numerous repeats, and the rise of the VCR raised Bad News to cult status, mainly among college students.

BBC - h2g2 - Bad News - the Spoof Heavy Metal Band
Bad News is a spoof heavy metal band created in 1983 as part of the UK TV series The Comic Strip Presents.
Their first film, Bad News Tour, follows the band as they set off on the first date of an extremely low budget British tour.
While the rest of the 'documentary' was a spoof, the footage of the band on stage at Donnington was genuine, as the comics came dangerously close to becoming a real band in 1987.

The positive: a few hired guns don’t embarrass themselves too bad (Rob Young’s piece highlighting electronic music’s roots in the classical avant garde of the forties doesn’t read like it was written by a crackhead), it’s pretty inclusive and the timelines and general facts are straight.
All these losers had to do was keep making trashy, screechy glam-influenced metal and they’d probably still be living like Caligula today… But they got grandiose on the cocaine, inflated their petty spats way out of proportion and lost track of what made their music fun in the first place.

First, the good news: With Billy Bob Thornton and his "Bad Santa" writers on board and on-a-roll Richard Linklater (the critically acclaimed "Before Sunset" and the audience-acclaimed "School of Rock") calling the shots, there was sufficient cause for hope that the picture would emerge as something else than yet another pointless remake.
For those with a scorecard, the first "Bad News Bears" inspired a pair of inferior follow-ups -- 1977's "The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training" and 1978's "The Bad News Bears Go to Japan" -- neither of which featured Matthau or were directed by Ritchie.
The new version is definitely better than the two sequels, with Thornton bringing his own curmudgeonly irreverent spin to the role of Coach Buttermaker, here a former pro baseball player-turned-exterminator who spent all of a couple of innings in a big league game.

This is not to say that the original film is much better than a button-pushing vehicle for the Walter Matthau persona, but to suggest that, for what it was, at least it was better than another button-pushing vehicle for the Billy Bob Thornton persona.
Adding an East Indian and a kid in a wheelchair but otherwise keeping the racial mix of Ritchie's film largely intact, Linklater's Bad News Bears is often a shot-for-shot redux--the worst kind of cover song that does nothing new that's good while failing to accentuate whatever made the first worth updating to begin with.
Bad News Bears, on the other hand, is little more than a revival tour of a hoary old favourite, and one that actually highlights by its minor elisions and additions exactly how much more timid we've become over the last thirty years.
