Bad Santa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bad Santa is a 2003 film directed by Terry Zwigoff, produced by Joel and Ethan Coen, and starring Billy Bob Thornton as the title character and Tony Cox (best known for Friday and Me, Myself and Irene) as his partner-in-crime.
The movie attracted bad publicity before its release from critics who likened the movie to an "evil twin" of Miracle on 34th Street and chided The Walt Disney Company for allowing such a beloved figure as Santa Claus to be trashed by its Miramax subsidiary.
The mainstream figures beloved by those chiding Miramax and Disney for Bad Santa are cited by many survivors of abuse as being most likely to abuse characters such as Therman.

An African-American dwarf cum elf with a bad attitude, a department-store St. Nick who pees in his costume, and more synonyms for copulation than you can shake a candy cane at: "Bad Santa" is almost symphonic in its crudeness.
After 90-odd minutes of salacious gross-out jokes and unapologetically bad behavior, I left the theater feeling cleaner, more virtuous, and more filled with love for my fellow human beings than I did after that overcooked heartwarmer "Love Actually" (with its wearying catchphrase, borrowed from the Troggs, "Love is all around").

slant // magazine.com: Film Review - Bad Santa
Bad Santa is a work of profoundly skeptical vulgarity which refuses to kowtow to, if not works against established generic notions of the "Christmas film," but this refusal is so poorly versed, so shoddily constructed, that what lingers in the mind is the vulgarity itself rather than any well-articulated subversive intention.
Bad Santa does indeed have a sentimental streak; presumably once the filmmakers have demonstrated their lack of belief in generic clichés, they feel that they can adopt the strategies of those very same clichés with impunity.
Bad Santa tries to be as vulgar and offensive as possible so that it might somehow justify the inevitability of its own happy ending.

Written by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (2001's "Cats & Dogs"), "Bad Santa" is wildly offbeat in its tone and subject matter, but unexpectedly traditional in its moralistic tale of a good-hearted child who brings cheer (or, at the least, something vaguely resembling it) to a desperately lost soul.
