 Monarch Notes - Comedies of William Shakespeare
The first kind of authorized text is usually called a "good quarto" and the pirated text a "bad quarto." Sometimes, a bad quarto was followed by a good quarto publication.
Both kinds of texts were usually printed in modest-sized volumes and called "quartos," a word designating the size of the pages.
Shakespeare's complete works were published in a large folio volume in 1623 by two of Shakespeare's friends, John Heminges and Henry Condell.

Written between 1598 and the summer of 1602, this masterpiece of Elizabethan theatre first appeared in print in 1603 in a version known as the Bad Quarto, a pirated version with no authority.
The authorised Second Quarto (Q2) followed shortly after the first, while a slightly altered and reduced version was published in the First Folio of Shakespeare's complete works.
In theatre, Hamlet is possibly the most often produced work, in almost every western country, and it is considered a crucial test for mature actors ; notably Hamlet 's soliloquy (Act Three, Scene One), the most popular passage of this play, is so well known that it has become a stumbling-block for many modern actors.

 Full text and plot summary of The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare
The play that follows is that which Sly is supposed to be watching, but he is soon removed from the action and only in the bad quarto text is he given a further part.
A play called "The Taming of A Shrew" was published in 1594 but there is a strong likelihood that this is not Shakespeare's source as was once thought but a corruption or alternate version of it compiled by actors.
The Taming of the Shrew is an early comedy by Shakespeare that seems to have been written circa 1592.

 Sotheby's to sell first folio of Shakespeare
No contemporary manuscripts of any of Shakespeare’s plays survive (with the possible exception of two pages in the collaborative play Sir Thomas More) and, although half of the contents of the First Folio had previously appeared in either ‘good’ or ‘bad’ quarto editions, the remaining 18 have survived only because the First Folio was published.
The fact that a First Folio should have been acquired by a Nonconformist minister is noteworthy in itself, since the Puritans banned all stage performances from 1642, a ban which lasted until the Restoration in 1660.
This exceptional copy of the First Folio is significantly enhanced by its extensive markings and annotations which shed new light on the folio’s provenance, date of binding and early readership.

Troilus and Cressida: dumbing down of the plot (adulteration from quarto or others?); lack of sympathy for the characters, on the part of the audience; lack of sympathy also for their comments about the world.
