The village of Baddeck is located on Cape Breton Island in the Province of Nova Scotia, Canada It is situated on the shores of the beautiful Bras d'Or Lake (Golden Arm) in the heart of Cape Breton lsland.
The McCurdy family was later induced to settle in Baddeck and with their coming came further progress for the growing community.
Later it was enlarged and from Baddeck Academy have gone forth men and women who were to distinguish themselves and bring honor to their homeland at the Bar, in the pulpit, in the medical profession, on the political platform and in business throughout Canada and the United States.

It is usually suggested that the name Baddeck derives from the Mi'kmaq word 'Abadak', meaning the place near the island, though another explanation is that it derives from 'Ebedeck', meaning a river running parallel to a lake.
He is remembered in the in the name of a store in the middle of Baddeck, and in the name Kidston Island, formerly known as Mutton Island, Duffus Island or Duke of Kent Island where the original store of the area had stood.
Campbell went on to be the member of parliament for the area and negotiated the building of the post office and customs office which opened in 1886 with it is said, the likeness of Campbell carved in the keystone over the main entrance.

In 1885, (United States inventor (born in Scotland) of the telephone (1847-1922)) Alexander Graham Bell, his wife Mabel, and their two young daughters, arrived by boat from the Strait of Canso.

On September 24, 1909, an attempt was made to fly the Baddeck II but was not successful due to the short distance the craft had for her run.

Baddeck: spend time at the Alexander Graham Bell musuem....your kids are old enough that they would probably benefit from it.
Baddeck is a charming town which is a good base for visiting Cape Breton.
The next morning, hit the trail counterclock wise and go back to Baddeck for the 2nd night unless you want to spend time hiking the Skyline Trail which is closer to Cheticamp.

Baddeck is a nice little town along the western edge of the Bra d’Or (bre-DORE) Lake in the central part of Cape Breton Island.
Baddeck has a picturesque pleasure boat marina right on the lake.
Do any of you know what a tetrahedron is? Its main benefit is that the air/frame structure has a very high ratio of strength to weight and this is the structure, we believe, is used for the space station.

I thought a ceilidh in Baddeck during the months of July and August, when this beautiful and friendly village becomes the tourist capital of Nova Scotia, would be a good way to expose visitors to our rich culture and heritage through traditional song and dance.
It was decided the name of the event would be the Baddeck Gathering Ceilidh, chosen because the Baddeck Gathering is a popular fiddle tune recorded by many Cape Breton artists including Winston Fitzgerald, Howie Mac Donald, Johnnie Wilmot, and our own Charlie Mac Cuspic.
Musicians were hired to perform six nights a week and local, up and coming performers were invited to drop in to share their talents of music and dance.

We used the KOA in Baddeck several years ago as a base to explore from.
There are some good (read bad) hills on the Cabot Trail and I don't regret leaving the trailer in Baddeck.
The Baddeck KOA which we have stayed at and enjoyed is now a non KOA campground and if anything is a better place.

The Silver Dart did not spend the winter at Hammondsport but was transported to Baddeck, where on February 23, 1909, it was flown for a distance of 3/4 mile by McCurdy---the first flight of a heavier-than-air machine in Canada.
One of the five machines it produced was tested for the Canadian army at Petawawa, Ontario, in the summer of 1909.
With McCurdy at the controls it landed in a rough field---quite in contrast to the smooth ice at Baddeck--- and disintegrated.
