Process for the separation of radioactive impurities of baddeleyite - Patent 4268485   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
For recrystallization of the baddeleyite or the baddeleyite concentrate quartz preferably is used as solvent.
Surprisingly, it is found that in the recrystallization pursuant to the invention of the zirconium dioxide of baddeleyite from a melt of SiO.sub.2, the ZrO.sub.2 -crystals obtained from the melt undergo a considerable purification in relation to the impurities of U.sub.3 O.sub.8 and ThO.sub.2 loaded by radioactive isotopes.
Baddeleyite concentrate as in Example 1 is mixed without further preliminary grinding with 30% by weight of quartz sand and melted down homogeneously in the electric-arc furnace.

Process for upgrading ores containing baddeleyite - Patent 4067953   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
As a result of this, the baddeleyite concentrate after high intensity magnetic separation was not as pure as it might have been, whilst excessive amounts of baddeleyite were lost in the tailings.
Foskorite and carbonatite ore from the Loole Kop plug of the Phalaborwa igneous complex is coarse ground, subjected to the removal of the bulk of the magnetite by magnetic separation, followed by flotation of the copper minerals and soap or fatty acid flotation of the apatite.
The result of this acid treatment of the middling fraction is a physical release of the baddeleyite in particulate form from contaminating mineral particles which are present in the middling fraction attached to the baddeleyite in the form of composite particles strongly held together by a cement of siliceous and/or carbonatitic material.

The solubility of baddeleyite (ZrO2) and zircon (ZrSiO4)
Solubility of baddeleyite in a HCl fluid was studied by a capsule technique with a further analysis of the composition of quenched solution and solid phase in a hydrothermal high pressure apparatus [12].
The values of free Gibbs energy for zircon and baddeleyite were reconciled from equilibrium (16) using our experimental data on the concentration of silicon in the solution in equilibrium with baddeleyite-zircon association and on the concentration of zirconium in the solution in equilibrium with zircon-quartz association.

A comparison of the in situ high-pressure XRD spectra of the nanocrystalline and bulk baddeleyite structures at 34(1) GPa shown in Fig.
Significantly, the a and b unit cell parameters of the nanocrystalline baddeleyite are 1.4 % and 1.7 % larger than those of the bulk phase.
The baddeleyite structure is not quenchable even as nanocrystals and, therefore, could not be examined under TEM.

The breakdown of zircon and baddeleyite through reaction with sodium hydroxide is the most common method for pure oxide and chemical production.
The structure of the oxygen ions is not therefore planar and a buckling in the O11 plane occurs, and the O1 plane is quite irregular.
The twin plane is composed of O11 ions which allow the oxygen ions in each of the twins to move slightly out of their equilibrium position resulting in minimal distortion.

It always occurs with hafnium, which has almost identical chemical properties.
The chief ore is zircon (the silicate); baddeleyite (the oxide) also has some importance.
Zircon is recovered (along with monazite, ilmenite, and rutile) from certain beach sands in New South Wales, Australia, and near Jacksonville, Fla. The metal is produced by the Kroll process.

Description: Baddeleyite is a rare zirconium oxide found in a variety of environments, including kimberlite, syenite and gabbro.
It may survive weathering as a detrital mineral.
KENOSHA COUNTY: Baddeleyite occurs as coatings on zircon from a subsurface, diamond-bearing lamprophyre diatreme within the outskirts of Kenosha.
