Under a plan for the automotive industry devised by Australian Senator John Button, the Australian Big Five manufacturers—Ford, Holden, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Toyota, who each had plants in the country—were to cooperate to produce badge-engineered cars and realize economies of scale.
Every aspect of the organization should reflect the identity, from the way the automobiles are engineered to the way the telephones are answered by an after-sales service department receptionist.
The author examines the fate of the Toyota Corolla and Chevrolet Prizm and compares it to Senator Button's plan of Australia in the late 1990s, during which the Australian big five were forced to rely on badge engineering to distinguish their products.

 MG 1100 - Profile
The American market was judged as being ready for an MG 'compact' and with this in mind the badge engineered MG 1100 was launched nearly a year after the first Austin/Morris versions were first seen.
The 1100 was quite revolutionary and was described in all the promotional literature as "the most advanced MG of all time!" This statement no doubt raised a few eyebrows from the ranks of the diehard enthusiasts and the car was at the time a most unwelcome piece of badge engineering.
The BMC Spanish subsidiary, Authi, did produce an MG 1100 under licence alongside Minis, they were very similar to their English counterpart except they were left hand drive and carried Spanish instrumentation.

Sadly, Vauxhall found that while its automobiles were widely coveted and held in the highest of regard by both their owners and the general public alike, their high-profile/low volume vehicles could not be profitably produced.
By the 1970s, and much to the dismay of died-in-the-wool Luton fans, Vauxhalls went 'continental' and began to share platforms with Opel that were identical except for the badging and the side of the car that the driver sat on.

While the imminent end of British Leyland could be seen long in advance, the ability of Rover to survive the BL morass and continue in production to the present day is rather remarkable.
