  Flood threat rising in Badger
Badger, which in February 2003 was overwhelmed by flood waters that then froze over, is again under a flood threat from river levels that spiked over the weekend.
Badger Mayor Bill Foley said there is no reason for the 800 residents in the town to panic, but officials are concerned as they continuously monitor water levels.
Officials with the Newfoundland and Labrador government and AbitibiBowater are working with the town on a plan to keep people safe if there is another flood.

ewfoundland and Labrador as a fishing destination is known mostly to anglers in the U.S. northeast, and mainland Canada from Ontario east.
Other good Labrador rivers, which can only be reached by plane and helicopter, are the Eagle, White Bear and Sandhill in southern Labrador and the Big, St. Michael's, Adlatok and Hunt Rivers on the north Labrador Coast.
All along the south and part of the north Labrador coast there are good concentrations of sea-run brook trout in all streams and rivers.

 The EXPLOITS RIVER "Focus on Flooding"
Ice jams, formed during a period of high winds, blowing snow and extremely cold temperatures, caused the Badger, Exploits and Red Indian Rivers to spill their banks, washing away riverside structures and encasing the entire town in ice.
Badger's Flood Risk Zone Map shows that a number of residential streets are within the 100-year flood risk zone, or "floodway fringe," and that some streets are within the 20-year flood risk zone, or "designated floodway."
Although residents of Badger had little warning of the flood of February 2003, the town's flood risk is monitored by a provincial flood forecasting centre operated by the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The earliest electric utility company in Newfoundland was the St. John's Electric Light Company formed in 1885 by A.M. Mackay, the superintendent of the Anglo-American Telegraph Company.
Newfoundland's first hydro-electric generating station was built at Petty Harbour in 1900.
The Anglo-Development Newfoundland Company (AND) owned two of the early hydro-electric generating stations in Newfoundland, one on the Exploits River near Grand Falls, the other by Bishops Falls, which supplied electricity to the Grand Falls pulp and paper mill and to the surrounding communities, both built in 1908.

Canada (Minister of Fisheries) Grimey is musing about taking legal action against the federal government for its negliegent management of the Newfoundland fishery over the past 50 years.
(Newfoundland itself would probably be sued by Labradorians for its mismanagement of resources in that part of the province, for one thing.)

Tradition says that these coves were settled by families who had been fishing the grounds around Badger Bay and Seal Bay.
A business was established at Great Triton which supplied many fishermen in the area and became involved in supplying schooners for the Labrador fishery.
