Soran and Badinan are two towns (the "i" ending makes it an adjective, thus "of Badinan," or "of Soran") whose names have been used by some as a shorthand for these two groups.
Badinan (Bahdinan) is a town in Southern Turkey, also found as Gürmese or Gürmeêe on some maps.

One of the princes built a church for the jews in the city and still its remains are clear and in sight.
It lies in the city center on the western of Khabir river and it is still in sight, it was the governing house in the reign of Badinan Emirate but the prince (Ali Khan 1205- 1212H) renovated and extended the castle.
The castle was erected on the ruins of an older castle because the remained parts indicate that it was a strong and hard castle built by big pebble stones and coated with gypsum, still there is a huge tower erected by sequared stones still in sight.

The second well-publicized event was the mass exodus of at least 65,000, and perhaps as many as 80,000, Iraqi Kurdish refugees from the northern mountains of the Badinan area into the Turkish borderlands, during the final days of August.
Yet Halabja and Badinan are merely two pieces in a much larger jigsaw puzzle, and they formed part of a concerted offensive against the Kurds that lasted from March 1987 until May 1989.

The town was an important and strategic location for the Emirate, the town was ruled by one of the relatives of the pasha or a member from his family.
After the formation of Region Government, the district witnessed an important development, the strategic road from Duhok to Erbil passes in the middle of the district, (Qandil bridge) was built on the great (Zab) river.

At the Aski Kalak checkpoint on the bridge spanning the Zey Badinan, the commander of the local Kurdish unit is eager for news from outside and defiantly proclaims that he will defend the bridge, not blow it, should the Iraqis attack before the Americans.
