Soundgarden : Badmotorfinger - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Pretty much everything about Badmotorfinger is a step up from its predecessors -- the production is sharper and the music more ambitious, while the songwriting takes a quantum leap in focus and consistency.
Conventional wisdom has it that despite platinum sales, Badmotorfinger got lost amid the blockbuster success of Nevermind and Ten (all were released around the same time).
And Badmotorfinger fulfills them, pulling all the different threads of the band's sound together into a mature, confident, well-written record.

 30. Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Badmotorfinger is the sound of thunder, of the furies, of thousands of marauders pillaging the hills.
Songs often centered around surrealist notions such as "I close my eyes and walk a thousand years / a thousand years that aren't mine," as Cornell sings on "Room A Thousand Years Wide." But it was a new type of psychedelia, mixing heavy metal fantasy and meaty riffing with the decades-old psychedelic notions.
But upon retrospect, Badmotorfinger stands tall as the creative peak of one of the '90s greatest rock bands.

The biggest radio hit off Badmotorfinger, although it had to be shortened.
Badmotorfinger is a dark album, but it gets darker in Superunknown.
It was one of the most influential albums of the 90's, and although it wasn't very known because it was overshadowed by other grunge bands, I still think they were the strongest grunge band of all time, and to think where they would be at if they were still alive is mind boggling.

To put things in context, I think that 'Badmotorfinger' is BETTER than 'Superunknown', showing really how masterful this album is. This is Soundgarden at their heaviest or even more, it is grunge at its heaviest.

It was released on translucent yellow vinyl in the UK and there are a limited number of copies of Badmotorfinger on colored vinyl elsewhere.
There is an ultra-ultra-rare promo with a cover that has the same "wheel" motif but different colors: blue background, yellow circle, green logo with a band photo on the backside of the cover; this strange-sounding color scheme is what was originally proposed.
The rarest non-promo issue of Badmotorfinger comes in a package made of wood and painted white, 2 halves that are hinged together in the shape of a half-oval (kind of like some toilet seats).

Unfortunately, the first few listens of Badmotorfinger had me thinking "sellout." The fact that MTV was putting "Outshined" in heavy rotation only justified my belief.
It's hard to classify Badmotorfinger as a "grunge" album when its overall sound is heavy metal.
In the end, Badmotorfinger took years to fully digest what it was (an ass-kicking album) as well as what it wasn't (a grunge template).

Ben Sheperd stepped in to replace Hiro Yamamoto, and his songwriting skills and musicianship meshed perfectly with the rest of the group. All the songs are good, with standouts such as "Good Eye Closed" and "Outshined" which was a staple on MTV.

Badmotorfinger is perhaps Soundgarden at their prime -a tumultous, pummeling titan equal parts Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, with a psychedelic metal tinge.
My pick for one of the best albums of the early '90s, along with Rage Against The Machine's debut.
It's a shame that Badmotorfinger was lost among the mainstream successes surrounding them, like Ten from pearl jam and Nevermind from Nirvana, but this is still a great pick up.

An early indication of how high Badmotorfinger is expected to climb, the Los Angeles Times recently predicted: "With its charismatic singer and monumental sound, Soundgarden is now poised to ride a unified hard-rock and art-rock audience into the stratosphere.
If Badmotorfinger clicks when it's released, the mighty riff to an alternative-rock audience, and intelligence, experimentation and urgency to metal fans dulled by a parade of peacocks." Senior Editor Lauren Spencer of Spin underlines: "Badmotorfinger is waiting to be used and abused, shredded and spindled, and just generally rocked to.
Tend to this garden of sound and I guarantee a fruitful crop will rise up and take over the world." A lot of Soundgarden's success this year will be due to contributions in writing from new bassist, Ben Shepherd: "Ben is a lot more versatile in his writing," says Chris.

It wasn't an instant success, but it did help to expand the group's grassroots following dramatically, and earned the band a Grammy award nomination.
A new bassist, Ben Shepherd, came onboard in 1990, and Soundgarden again increased its profile with the thundering, thrashing Badmotorfinger.
With a few tracks--"Outshined," "Jesus Christ Pose," and "Rusty Cage" (which was covered in 1996 by, of all people, Johnny Cash)--earning MTV Buzz Bin exposure, Soundgarden lit off on tours with Guns 'N Roses and Neil Young, and earned a spot on the second Lollapalooza tour.

The band's first fully realized album (released in 1991) was a thick, twisted, intelligent collection of bluster and guitars.
An honest successor to the bell-bottomed heavy rock of the '70s, Badmotorfinger was smarter, darker, more self-aware and more honest than the majority of albums often lumped in with it.
