Erykah Badu: Baduizm ---Ink Blot Magazine
It turned out to be a genius marketing plan, as Baduizm later crashed into the chart at #2 in February 1997.
The success of Baduizm gave her the chance to try acting, landing roles on daytime TV ("One Life To Live") and in a feature film ("Blues Brothers 2000").
No, Baduizm is not a cult, it's more a lifestyle, where self-respect is gained not by militant, fundamentalist action, but from the subtle way we respect our peers and our minds.

It had only been a short eight months since the release of her debut offering, Baduizm, a truly remarkable piece of work that put the then 26 year-old newcomer on the burgeoning Nu-Soul radar and which had everyone unanimously pinning her down as Billie Holiday’s successor.
“Baduizm Live” bears the same hiphop-streaked, jazz-infused Neo-Classic soul traits as its studio counterpart, only the transposition into a live environment imparts to the songs na elegance and poise which, combined with their creator’s ethereal, caramel-soft, oozy vocals, all but reach perfection.
Although there is little here to excite jaded nerves owing to the sluggish pace of most of the songs, there is an element of surprise when the singer suddenly shifts from tea-sipping Lady Day soundalike to word-spewing girl-on-the-mike on the hiphop coda of “On & on”.

With a nimble, melodic voice owing little to RandB from the past 30 years, she phrased at odds with the beat and often took chances with her notes.
Like many in the contemporary rap world, though, she also had considerable talents at taking on different personas; "Otherside of the Game" is a poetic lament from a soon-to-be single mother who just can't forget the father of her child.
Erykah Badu 's revolution in sound -- heavier hip-hop beats over organic, conscientious soul music -- was responsible for her breakout, but many of the songs on Baduizm don't hold up to increased examination.

Rolling Stone : Erykah Badu: Baduizm : Music Reviews
Baduizm's strength lies in her ability to filter jazz vocals through hip-hop without any fuss or fanfare, much as D'Angelo and Mary J. Blige have fused rap and R&B. The funky piano riff that centers "4 Leaf Clover" owes as much to Snoop Doggy Dogg's "Gz and Hustlas" as it does to Thelonious Monk.
Baduizm was produced by, among others, newcomer Madakwu Chinwah and the Philadelphian rap instrumentalists Roots, who know something about making hip-hop with an organic feel.
But Badu, of course, is the real focus here: Baduizm showcases the heart and soul of a bohemian B-girl who happens to have an effortless jazz swing.

There was a long old wait for this official follow up to the mighty 'Baduizm'.
It finally arrived, and after some confusion concerning the track-listing (two different versions were released, initially) has settled down to become the fine album and follow up that it is. It's both harder hitting and more playful than 'Baduizm' at the same time, if that makes sense.
Overall this is a quality follow-up that consolidates rather than moves on her reputation, but long term that may prove to be a good thing.

It's disappointing, though, that she didn't include "Afro," a comic, freestyle blues number from "Baduizm" that just begs for live improvisation.

It's also real: On "Next Lifetime" and "Certainly", Badu demonstrates a remarkable ability to turn life's experiences into beautiful songs.
