Karl Baedeker (not Baedecker) (3 November 1801 4 October 1859) was a German publisher whose company Baedeker set the standard for authoritative guidebooks for tourists.
The son of a book printer, Baedeker was born in Essen, Prussia, and started his publishing company in 1827 in Koblenz.

 Epinions.com - Baedeker's Historical Palestine
Baedeker's Historical Palestine demonstrates that for most of the modern era "Palestine"--as the entire region was called in 1912--was little more than a backwater, with Jerusalem serving as a remote outpost of the Ottoman Empire.
The demographic information included in Baedeker's makes it clear that until the latter part of the 19th century, the overall population of the region was relatively small--whether that population was counted as Jewish, Moslem, or Christian.
Baedeker's description includes poignant references to an ancient and flourishing Jewish community that was destroyed utterly during the anti-Jewish "riots" that erupted in Palestine during the 1920s and 30s.

Bancroftiana, Number 123 Fall 2003: Collecting Baedeker Travel Guides
Baedeker travel guides — officially “handbooks for tourists”—have so entrenched themselves that dictionaries now carry the word “Baedeker” as the generic term for a travel guide.
Baedeker guides have been recognized as being authoritative, well written, and well designed, featuring superb maps and being of uniform and convenient size.
While other Baedeker staff no doubt collected the information, wrote up the texts, and prepared the maps for the very early handbooks, Karl Baedeker himself is said to have sometimes traveled incognito to doublecheck a handbook’s accuracy.
