Baen Books - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Baen Books is an American publishing company established in 1983 by SF publishing industry long-timer Jim Baen.
Although Baen himself is politically conservative (which has led to friction with and departures by at least one liberal author), he publishes works covering a broad spectrum of political philosophies.
Baen Books also hosts a large online community in which the publisher, authors, and many readers take part via Baen's Bar, an internet forum with personal forums for the publisher and each author.

 Jim Baen (Founder, Baen Books)
The science fiction publishing industry is constantly complaining of poor sales and fickle customers, yet independent house Baen Books has done a steady business providing space opera and military sci-fi by the likes of David Weber, Lois McMaster Bujold and relative newcomer John Ringo.
Baen is celebrating its 20th anniversary through 2003.
Perhaps though I am confusing the lamentable state of SF with the equally lamentable state of fiction publishing, which I believe to be a result of the wide-and-growing-wider supply of electronic entertainment of all kinds.

Baen's Bar, A Successful Community, by Walt Boyes
Baen got an interesting idea about two + years ago: He suggested to his authors that they should post "snippets" of works in progress, to get continuity checks, reality checks, historical and logical consistency checks, and, oh yeah, to whet appetites for the books when they finally came out.
One of the most interesting of Baen's uses of community is his counter to the fact that midlist authors are hard to push.
Baen encourages his midlist authors to participate actively in the Bar community, and sales of Baen's midlist books have steadily increased, because people get to know them, see snippets of their work, and they buy books they probably never would have ot herwise.

Baen Books, who do a lot of series publishing, have found that giving away electronic editions of the previous installments in their series to coincide with the release of a new volume sells the hell out of the new book -- and the backlist.
The Gutenberg press meant that rather than owning one or two books, a member of the ruling class could amass a library, and that rather than picking only a few subjects from enshrinement in print, a huge variety of subjects could be addressed on paper and handed from person to person.
This is interesting because the history of the book is the history of the Enlightenment, the Reformation, the Pilgrims, and, ultimately the colonizing of the Americas and the American Revolution.

Baen - [laughs] Along with Larry Niven, I am not the person people would think of when they name "Mister Tact." And this may be why I have a group of writers I work with - we become friends, and then I don't have to worry about being socially adept.
Baen - I think it very definitely shaped the birth of the space program, and is still an influence although not as great.
Baen - I think of them as "the rice bowl crowd," because they have to go begging for grants to fill up their bowls.

That's All I've Got to Say: Raving about Baen
Webscriptions was the first; a few years back, Baen decided that they would make monthly ebook versions of the new books they published each month available as a downloadable bundle.
Out of this came the idea for the Baen Free Library: authors who cared to do so could make one or more of their Baen works available for free download—and many did; there are now over two dozen books in the Free Library that can be downloaded at no charge.
Perhaps the biggest reason is that Jim Baen feels that most people these days prefer tree-books to ebooks for pleasure reading—but when given the chance to read a book in electronic format, they may read enough of it to decide they like it enough to purchase the actual physical product.

Baen is particularly surprised that the electronic downloads have even stimulated sales of the company's hardcover books.
It is a striking puzzle: the more e-texts Baen Books makes available cheaply or free, the more it has been able to sell the most expensive kind of printed book.
Baen, anticipating the power of the online media, established the policy two years ago of buying all electronic rights when it strikes a book deal with an author.

After all they are in the Bar because they like the books we publish, so when they get to talking about them what it amounts to is refining and clarifying and unifying generally positive opinions.
