  Baeocystin Information
Baeocystin is a mushroom alkaloid and analog of the psychedelic hallucinogenic drug psilocybin, a tryptamine derivative.
Little information exists with regard to human pharmacology, but a dosage of 10mg is reported to produce entheogenic effect, which is to say, hallucinogenic effects that has been attributed sacred status by some religious groups.

Baeocystin is a mushroom alkaloid and analog of the psychedelic hallucinogenic drug psilocybin, a tryptamine derivative.
First isolated from the mushroom psilocybe baeocystis, baeocystin is a demethylated derivative of psilocybin.

Baeocystin, a precursor to psilocybin, was also detected (0.01% - 0.5% dry weight) in all naturally occurring specimens of P. samuiensis but in much smaller concentrations than psilocybin.
This is in sharp contrast to the high concentrations of baeocystin and very small amounts of psilocin (only in a few specimens) which were detected in naturally occurring field specimens of P. semilanceata from various origin (Gartz, 1993), and in vitro cultivated fruit bodies of P. semilanceata (Gartz, 1991a, 1991b).
Identical concentrations of the alkaloids (psilocybin, psilocin, and baeocystin) were found in the cultivated fruit bodies of P. samuiensis and P. semilanceata grown in rye/horse dung (Gartz, 1991a, 1991b).

In this investigation the extraction of psilocin, psilocybin and baeocystin with pure methanol was not completely after 30 min in all species and even 6 hours in analysis of P. cubensis and G. purpuratus.
Baeocystin as incompletely methylated counterpart and possible precursor of psilocybin (Gartz 1989a) was found in all species by using methanol but in some cases only in very small amounts (Table 1).
For example the phosphoric acid ester psilocybin, baeocystin and aeruginascin in these acidic extracts from I. aeruginacens were stable during heating in contrast to the behaviour of the same alkaloids in solutions of P. cubensis a nd P. cyanescens.

They are thought to act by altering the concentration of indoles, including serotonin, in the central nervous system and thus interfering with the transmission and processing of external stimuli (Young et al., 1982).

Psilocybin, psilocin and baeocystin levels varied in the blueing fruit bodies of the new species Psilocybe natalensis from South Africa.
The highest concentrations of these alkaloids were found in naturally grown and cultivated fruit bodies of Psilocybe azurenscens which is an indigenous species of the Pacific Northwest, U.S.A. The relative alkaloidal content of psilocybin, psilocin and baeocystin found in Galerina steglichii from Germany was similar to that measured in Psilocybe nataliensis.
Psilocybin and its precursos baeocystin as well as psilocin were found in every fruit body of Psilocybe natalensis (Table 2).

You may want to seek semilanceata if you were interested in testing/verifying whether baeocystin had any noticible difference in effects compared to psilocybin.

Similar amounts of baeocystin were found to be present (a homologue of psilocybin found in some dozen mushrooms including Psilocybe baeocystis) and, a couple of years later, there was a report of a third indole alkaloid.
Its solubility (in water, methanol and acetic acid) suggests that the structure might be very close to that of psilocybin and baeocystin.

The activity of psilocybin (O-phosphoryl-4-hydroxy-DMT) when taken by mouth is not related lo the phosphoric acid radical since the pharmacological effects of psilocin (4-hydroxy-DMT) are identical (Horita and Weber 1961).
Pharmacological information for baeocystin (4-hydroxy-N-methyltryptamine) was not found; however, one would expect hallucinogenic activity to parallel that of the N-alkyl-tryptamines and thereby would expect the drug to be weakly hallucinogenic.
It is thought that in the past most clandestine syntheses of indolealkylamines used indole as the starting material (Speeter and Anthony 1954).
