The PROVINCE OF CATANDUANES, (opposite the Bicol Region), is bounded by the Maqueda Channel on th the west, the Pacific Ocean on the north and east, and the Lagonoy Gulf and Cabugao Bay on the south.
The Island, with a land area of 1,511.5 square kilometers and a population of 215,356 in 2000, is composed of 11 towns, with Virac as the capital.
Although it was reported that the galleon was shipwrecked near the coast of Catanduanes in April 1576, the others claimed that the disaster was caused by bad weather and all the crewmembers perished.

There are only two (2) educational levels available, the secondary or high school level and the elementary level, wherein the latter is divided into 2 school districts: the Bagamanoc South and North Elementary School Districts composing of 12 elementary schools.
Each district has one central elementary school, the Bagamanoc Central Elementary School for the south district and the Bugao Elementary School for the north district.
For the secondary level, there are three public high schools in the municipality strategically located to cater to the educational needs of the high school age population.

A 22-year old former errand boy at the Bagamanoc police station is set to file charges against a police officer for a shooting incident two months ago that was apparently hushed up by the authorities.
A resident of barangay Cavinitan in the capital town has claimed that she was mauled by three of her neighbors recently due to a misunderstanding.
Even at the height of typhoon “Yoyong,” personnel and volunteers of the Philippine National Red Cross Catanduanes Chapter were already distributing relief goods to typhoon victims at evacuation centers in the capital town.

About an hour later, Catanduanes police director Senior Superintendent Rosero was leading a police team returning to Virac from barangay Buyo where the policemen conducted "hot pursuit" operation when a Nissan Frontier patrol car they were riding hit a landmine.
According to witnesses, he was among a band of rebels who raided the Bagamanoc municipal police station in 2001, killing two police officers and taking away several firearms.

VIRAC, CATANDUANES (26 May) — The provincial government has approved a P5.8 million calamity fund as initial support for the immediate relief of thousands of families rendered homeless by typhoon ‘Dindo’ which battered the island province Monday May 17, with packing winds of about 180 kph.
The calamity fund will have priority for the towns of Pandan, Baras, Gigmoto, Bagamanoc and San Andres towns in the island province which bore the brunt of typhoon ‘Dindo’.
Reports said that some 110 houses were totally damaged in the municipality of Bagamanoc.
