BAGANGA, Davao Oriental -- To prevent the entry of communist rebels into civilian communities in this town, the local military, police and the municipal government have started imposing a new identification card system.
It is the barangay leaders themselves, the people themselves who asked us to impose the ID system in order to check the entry of people in their villages," Senior Superintendent Catalino Cuy, police chief for Davao Oriental province, said.
Cuy said he and Major Nixon Fortes, commanding officer of the Army's 8th Special Forces Battalion, are also planning to impose the ID system in Davao Oriental's eastern town of Cateel.

The tournament is one of the highlights of the founding celebration of the Municipality of Baganga.

BAGANGA, Davao Oriental - Local government officials here have been alarmed by the reported "exodus" of Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) youth council officers to the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines.
Local officials of the towns of Baganga, Caraga, Cateel, and Boston claimed that many SK officers in their towns have already joined the New People's Army (NPA).
Palma Gil said the provinces of Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley have become "the perfect sanctuary for the NPA because these provinces still have lush forests."
