Bagatelles, Opus 126 (Beethoven) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Beethoven's Bagatelles, Opus 126 were his last work for his own instrument, the piano.
The composition is a set of six bagatelles.
They do not make the virtuosic demands of most of the other piano work of Beethoven's late period, standing instead as a minor work for the amateur.

Beethoven's older listeners at the premiere would have recognized this as so-called "Turkish music." Concludes with 6/8 variation of the main theme with chorus.
Beethoven's Ninth makes extreme demands on the singers, partly because his vocal writing seems designed to evoke a sense of effort, and partly because concert pitch is higher now than it was in Beethoven’s day.

Beethoven was born in Bonn, Holy Roman Empire (present-day Germany).
Although Beethoven wrote many beautiful and lyrical melodies, another radical innovation of his music, compared especially to that of Mozart and Haydn, is his extensive use of forceful, marked, and even stark rhythmic patterns throughout his compositions and, in particular, in his themes and motifs, some of which are primarily rhythmic rather than melodic.
Beethoven's greatest works are the 32 piano sonatas, the nine symphonies, the five piano concertos, the violin concerto, the triple concerto and the late string quartets.

I'm not sure he is perfectly attuned to the moody and volatile Beethoven of the Bagatelles, but he gets near enough for me to enjoy them.
As for the Bagatelles, I am blown away by the ferocity and speed of the presto movement; Richter is really going for it and it leaves one exhausted.

Bagatelle (from French by way of the Italian bagattella, a trifle) is a game, the object of which is to get a number of balls past pins (which act as obstacles) into holes.
The best known bagatelles are probably those by Ludwig van Beethoven, who wrote three sets, opus 33, opus 119, opus 126 and the "Bagatelle in A minor", better known as Für Elise.
Other notable examples are Franz Liszt's "Bagatelle sans tonalité" (an early exploration into atonality) and the set of fourteen, opus six, by Béla Bartók.

A critic wrote of the recital, 'Beethoven remains the ultimate challenge for the pianist', and it is true that in the 'Hammerklavier' Sonata especially, Richter communicates the feeling of rising to meet a supreme challenge.
The early Sonata in C, opus 2 no. 3, is a highly individual work, and Richter clearly believed its forward-looking qualities would lead towards the world of the later masterpiece.
In between come the opus 126 Bagatelles, under-estimated by those who do not really know them, these form Beethoven's final statement as a composer of piano music, surprisingly wide ranging in their imageries and forward-looking in their style.

Both are among my all-time favorite readings, though I don't feel that Richter or anyone else quite matches the rich wisdom and total coherence of Schnabel's aged mono account of all six. That brings us to the Hammerklavier, the most fiendishly-difficult Sonata to interpret ever written by Beethoven (or anyone else, for that matter).
I'm sure there are other great accounts out there, but you can't go wrong with any of these.Highly recommended.
