Bagenalstown, otherwise known as Muine Bheag, is sited on a pleasant reach of the River Barrow and derives its name from Walter Bagenal, who founded the town in the 18th century.
Situated 2km north-east of Bagenalstown it dates to the 17th century and was seat of the Bagenal family for three centuries.
Ballyloughan Castle also to be found near Bagenalstown consists of a twin-towered gatehouse, a hall and foundations of one of the corner towers of a large castle of circa 1300.

Bagenalstown and Pont Pean are now united following the signing of a Town Twinning Charter in the French town on Sunday May 7th.
We saw the Abbey of Paimpont and the Guillotin Oak, a tree which in 1791 was used as a hiding place for a rebel priest who was being chased by the Republican Army.

Sunday April 18 was an historic day for the people of Bagenalstown, with the signing of a charter which officially twins the town with Pont Pean in France.
A group of thirty-seven residents of the French town were in Bagenalstown for the ceremony, and during their four-day stay they took in several tours of the area and attended special night time functions in the town.
Armelle Desrez, has been one of the guiding lights behind the twinning, and she was thrilled with the reception the group received in Bagenalstown, and she looked forward to the return visit in France next year.

We left Graiguenamanagh on Saturday 17 August after a 24-hour postponement to clean out the fuel tank and get fresh fuel delivered: the old fuel was of uncertain vintage and quality.
We got in to Bagenalstown at 22.30 after a 10-hour trip [15 miles, 10 locks.
The quayside was lined with boats; 78M was in pride of place and looked great, especially when the parade of contemporary traction engines chuffed and whistled past.

We have also helped to reinstate the Bagenalstown Tennis Club and assisted in running a hugely successful tennis camp for the children of the town.
