Topic: Bagnall

In the News (Wed 15 Feb 12)

  Bryn Mawr Classical Review 94.03.19
Bagnall's thorough papyrological and epigraphical documentation of this period, deftly deployed at every page to criticize prior views or assemble a basis for historical generalization, can be credited partly to the existence of a computer database of fourth-century documents that he set up in the mid-1980's with NEH support.
Bagnall observes a profound decline in village organization during the fourth century, due largely to the decline of the native temples.
Bagnall justifies this monolithic picture of fourth-century Christianity on two grounds: that such diversity as the literary texts demonstrate is not reflected in the papyri, and that ideological diversity did not matter anyway to most of those claiming Christian identity.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 97.3.24
Bagnall aims his work at historians who are not themselves papyrologists, but who have occasion to use papyrological texts in their work.
While Bagnall is largely recounting the work of others here, he makes a useful contribution by assembling the results of these studies, which taken together seriously undermine traditional views on the inapplicability of papyrological evidence to the rest of the empire.
Bagnall suggests that papyrologists broaden their horizons to include more non-philological methods (as some have done) and that they collaborate more frequently with historians and other scholars to accomplish this.

 Bagnall Articulated Locomotives
The reason for the development of the articulated steam locomotive was to double the power output whilst keeping the locomotive sufficiently compact and flexible to negotiate the very sharp curves and severe gradients to be found on the narrow gauge sugar plantation lines in South Africa.
These Bagnall locomotives have been described by various writers as Garratts, Fairlies, Malletts and Meyers, but strictly speaking they are a design on their own, bearing some resemblance to the Garratt in that the boiler, cab, water tank and coal bunker are mounted on a common frame which is carried on the two power bogies.
She was larger than 2544, the main difference being the increase in cylinder size to 9in by 12in, and set the pattern for future engines of the class.
