Bagnell Dam impounds the Osage River in the U.S. state of Missouri, creating the Lake of the Ozarks.
The 148-foot (45 m) tall concrete gravity dam was built by the Union Electric Company for the purpose of hydroelectric power generation as its Osage Powerplant.
The project employed thousands of laborers, providing a large economic boost to the rural area around the dam, and to the state as a whole, at a time when jobs were scarce.

The old 4-6-0 wheel-configured locomotives that plied the Bagnell line most assuredly had their work cut out for them as they lumbered (no pun intended), loaded with railroad cross-ties up, up and up some more, from Bagnell to Eldon.

The town was named Bagnell after the brothers and their business, and they often visited in their private railroad car.
About 1890, my great-grandfather, Thomas Bagnell, bought a large (a little over 2,000 acres, or about 800 hectares) cattle farm that he'd seen while they were planning the track building for the Missouri Pacific railroad line that runs westward from St. Louis (the Missouri Pacific line is now part of the Union Pacific System).
The dam was named after the nearby town of Bagnell, which enjoyed a second boom from the construction.
