Many of the men that came to the Ozarks to participate in the construction of Bagnell Dam, stayed in the area to watch the development of one of the best vacation areas in the midwest.
The rails were constructed to bring materials to Bagnell Dam from 14 miles away in Eldon, Missouri.

Bagnell Dam impounds the Osage River in Missouri, creating the Lake of the Ozarks.
The 148-foot (45 m) tall concrete gravity dam was built by the Union Electric company, now part of Ameren, for the purpose of hydroelectric power generation as its Osage Powerplant.
The project employed thousands of laborers, providing a large economic boost to the rural area around the dam, and to the state as a whole, at a time when jobs were scarce.

The first to study the concept of damming the Osage River was a man named Ralph W. Street of Kansas City, in 1912, several years before the enactment of the Federal Water Power Act of 1920.

When Miller County schools opened their doors in the autumn of 1929, the school districts around the construction site of the new hydroelectric dam were simply overwhelmed.
Bearing the brunt of this bulging school population were two schools on the north side of the Osage River - Bagnell and Pleasant Grove (affectionately known as Pig Wallow by its patrons, now located near the Osage National clubhouse.) The county superintendent (forerunner to today's district superintendents) was left scrambling for some kind of solution.
The state of Missouri was called in to help and did so by granting to Bagnell the status of a Job (as in the Bible) school to provide secondary instruction for older students.
