Like Bagombo Snuff Box, the best part of the book is the introduction—except in this case, the introduction consists of a scant handful of material cannibalized from Timequake.
Bagombo Snuff Box is a fun diversion for uncritical reading, or as the author puts it, “a bunch of Buddhist catnaps.” Perhaps these will be the last books the old liar will publish.

(Fans of his from the genre will probably be rather disappointed by Bagombo Snuff Box as a result.) Most of them are set in midwest America, and the theme that a lot of them have is pretense - particularly maintaining or creating a facade of superiority.
He seems to have abandoned short story writing following the collapse of many of the American magazines which published them in the early sixties with less regret than other writers, and the sameness of these stories is perhaps indicative that they were not to be the field in which he would produce his best writing.
Bagombo Snuff Box is interesting, but not great.

Powell's Books - Bagombo Snuff Box by Kurt Vonnegut
And though Vonnegut may describe short fiction as a tonic to diminish daily troubles and lead the reader into a "pleasant state somewhere between sleep and restfulness," these pre-Cat's Cradle meditations are every bit as engaging, sly, and subversive as his later works.
Many of the stories in Bagombo Snuff Box feature O'Henry-type endings and Vonnegut's caricatures become more precise with each twist in plot.
"Bagombo Snuff Box resurrects Vonnegut's earliest efforts, stories written during the 50s and 60s, for such popular venues as The Saturday Evening Post and Collier....Unabashedly fablelike they can be either sly or sweet, sentimental or vaudevillian, but all are quietly subversive".

"Bagombo Snuff Box: Uncollected Short Fiction" represents the resurrection of 23 lost tales from a hodgepodge of magazines, from the Saturday Evening Post to the Cape Cod Compass, the kind of publications that helped support Vonnegut between his days as a PR flack at General Electric and his literary blockbuster, "Slaughterhouse Five."
"Bagombo Snuff Box" is a pleasant sampler of the comic science fiction and anecdotal-style humor that later matured into the fl comedy of his best novels.

It is equally pleasant to learn that Vonnegut was a national success during this time; although not the icon he would later become, he was indeed a minor celebrity within the pre-television Norman Rockwell world of the general interest weekly.
At points it is obvious that the younger Vonnegut had less than fully matured as a writer, but it is clearly Vonnegut, and fans will appreciate this window into the early development of the most likable giant of modern letters.
What comes through more than anything else in Bagombo Snuff Box is the sweetness and persistent innocence at the bottom of Vonnegut's soul, the fragile animals that would do mortal battle with a violent and vulgar world in his later work.

Although Vonnegut is known for his postmodern special effects, the stories collected in Bagombo Snuff Box contain very mild, if any, surrealistic qualities that might frighten off the less adventurous readers.
Readers who can recite passages from Breakfast of Champions at all hours of the day and use Kilgore Trout as an alias may be disappointed with the absence of aliens and random time warps to different planets that often make their way into Vonnegut's prose.
