The Atlantic forest of southern Bahia consists of four types of forest (Gouvêa, Silva and Hori 1976; Mori et al.
In southern Bahia, where endemism and diversity are particularly high and the extent of remaining intact forest is so low, the forest preserves are especially precious.
The Atlantic Coast forests of southern Bahia are part of the South-east Brazilian lowland to foothills Endemic Bird Area (B52).

Wayt Thomas, Associate Curator, Institute of Systematic Botany at The New York Botanical Garden, who is studying the plant diversity of the region.
Thomas is surveying the plant diversity of a 72,000 km2 area, the forests from southern Bahia south to Espirito Santo north of the Rio Doce.
Thomas' research shows that almost half the species occurring in a forest in Bahia's cacao region are found only in the coastal forest and over 25 percent are found only in southern Bahia.

Wayt Thomas, associate curator at the Institute of Systematic Botany at The New York Botanical Garden, who is studying the plant diversity of the Bahia region in Brazil.
By leaving the original forest canopy intact to shade the cacao trees, the "cabruca" forest preserves much of the plant diversity of the region, which enjoys one of the most diverse forests in the world and an abundance of unique species of plants found nowhere else on the planet.
It is estimated that 99.6 percent of the original forest has been destroyed since 1912, and logging and land clearing continue in the area despite a federal decree banning logging in the coastal forest, according to Thomas.

Antonio Bahia Filho was a consultant for a World Bank mission to Angola, and has served as a Technical Adviser to the CIMMYT South America Maize Regional Programme since 1990.

The Pacific coastal city of Bahia de Caraquez, Ecuador reacted to several simultaneous natural catastrophes (a significant earthquake in the midst of flooding and mud slides during El Nino in 1998) by declaring the intention to re-build as an ecological city through a by-law enacted in February, 1999.
Bahia de Caraquez was already an ecological city in these respects when the official declaration was made.
In the long run, the greatest benefit from preserving and enhancing ecologics in Bahia de Caraquez may not just be what it means here but what it can mean to the rest of both the developed and undeveloped worlds.

Different from other states of the Northeast, here, the donkeys are not attached to the reisado of bumba-meu-boi and it is used to cheer up parties in the small cities of the country, playing alone or together with other animals, by the sound of several music and musicians.

Genus named from John Frankenius, Professor of Botany in Sweden who made the first checklist of Swedish plants.
The small conspicuous flowers (rare for a saltmarsh species) are white to dark pink or blue-purple and bloom from June to October.
Found in upper levels of coastal salt marshes from central California to Bahia San Quintin, Baha California.

On 10 September 1788, Captain Alexandro Malaspina addressed to Antonio Valdés, Minister of Marine, a plan for a scientific and political voyage around the world to be performed by ships of the Spanish Royal Navy.
The proposal for an English convict settlement at Botany Bay had been extensively reported in English and European newspapers, and the departure of the First Fleet from Portsmouth had taken place in May 1787, although the settlement was actually made at Sydney Cove in the nearby Port Jackson.
By the bill passed into law this Session, the Settlement of Botany Bay may be made useful in case of a rupture.
