 Ain-Al-Yaqeen - June 3, 2005 - Article 7
Hariri's success was widely seen as a vote for his father whose February killing in a Beirut bomb blast triggered a major political upheaval in Lebanon that led Damascus to end its 29-year military presence.
Hariri, who along with a number of MPs in his electoral coalition greeted the crowds, said the victory of all the three tickets in Beirut's three constituencies amounted to a triumph for democracy which "they tried to suffocate," for coexistence and national unity, and a tribute to the late leader.
Hariri's alliance was one of solidarity, conciliation, and partnership between a historic representative of a faction of Christians represented by MP-elect Solange Gemayel and the Future Movement.

The Head Heeb: Round three to Aoun
The Hariri ticket has polled well among Sunnis and can still win when the final round is held in the north, but faces an uphill battle with 23 of 28 seats necessary to secure a majority.
This doesn't change the overall picture but it does alter the numbers somewhat: counting Bahia Hariri as part of the Hariri bloc and the Hizbullah candidates from Baabda and Beirut as part of HA-Amal, that leaves Hariri with 45, the HA-Amal alliance with 34 and the Aounists with 21.
If these results hold, the Hariri bloc could win a majority with 20 seats in the north, which seems doable given their support among the Sunnis but would require them to fend off an Aounist-led challenge in Tripoli.

The most dramatic event that took place at Baabda during consultations to designate a new prime minister was the appearance of slain ex-Premier Hariri's sister, Bahia Hariri, at the presidential palace to see President Lahoud and cast her vote for Mikati, the Beirut media noted on Saturday.
Bahia Hariri saw Lahoud separate from the opposition delegation although she is widely tipped as the opposition's choice for the premiership after the upcoming elections, when Mikati's government is constitutionally required to resign.
Hariri declared last week that she would stand for reelection in Sidon in spring on an opposition platform alone, not within Berri's list of Syrian loyalists.

To a Lebanese journalist, he shouted: "Shut up." He went to pray at Hariri’s grave and then proceeded to put it about that it was not Hariri - whom the Syrians believe inspired the UN resolution which demanded their military withdrawal - who had forced the retreat.
But Aoun announced last week that Hariri and Jumblatt were as bad as Rustum Ghazaleh, the former head of Syrian military intelligence in Lebanon - because both had co-operated with the Syrians in the past.
