En lo que va de este año, en los pueblos de Portete, Puerto Nuevo, Taguaira, Sillapana, Sillamana, Macen y Jarara, los paramilitares han asesinado a 12 personas mientras que 30 se encuentran desaparecidas.
Mientras los niños corren de un lugar a otro y las mujeres reclaman donaciones de hamacas o chinchorros para que puedan dormir, los hombres wayuu hablan en voz baja, se reúnen y planifican, pero, por sobre todas las cosas, se apoyan unos a otros.

The text said local residents were tortured, children were ''disappeared'', teenagers were raped, and women and men were murdered and their bodies dismembered.
There was also the massive displacement of some 500 Indians who fled Bahía Portete and the neighbouring village of Puerto Nuevo, now ghost towns, according to Amnesty.
The residents of Bahía Portete had recently been received threats from paramilitaries, said the human rights group.

A massacre allegedly committed by right-wing paramilitaries in the Caribbean border town of Bahia Portete two months ago reportedly killed at least 12 Indians, although 30 more, including 20 children, remain unaccounted for, according to Massachusetts-based Cultural Survival.
The Alta Guajira region in which Bahia Portete is located in a major route for traffickers smuggling everything from arms, Venezuelan gasoline and stolen cars to Colombian cocaine for shipment across the Caribbean.
ONIC charged that the massacre was provoked by those "who represent the interests of the groups who want to control the port of Bahia Portete" and that local authorities had advance knowledge of the attack but failed to protect the Indians.

On April 18, rightwing paramilitaries from a group calling itself the Wayuu Counterinsurgency Northern Bloc arrived in the indigenous Wayúu community of Bahía Portete, Uribia municipality, in the northeastern Colombian department of La Guajira, where they massacred at least 12 people.
In a message posted on the Colombia Indymedia website by the National Indigenous Organization of Colombia (ONIC), the Wayúu community reports that the paramilitaries tortured children to get information about their parents, raped young girls, murdered children and elderly people and destroyed the community’s cemetery.
A commission of the National Office of the Defender of the People arrived in the zone during the week of April 26 and corroborated the death of 80-year old Rosa Fince Uriana, whose mutilated body was found in Bahía Portete.

 Wayuu Indians go to war against Colombian government
During the last three years the community has suffered attacks and assassinations at the hands of paramilitary groups supported by troops of the Colombian Army's Second Brigade, based in the city of Barranquilla.
The persecution culminated on April 18 this year with the sack of the village of Bahía de Portete, and a massacre where a dozen people were murdered.
According to Amnesty International, the paramilitaries arrived at the village, where they interrogated a number of children on the whereabouts of their parents, killing some of them on the suspicion that they were lying.

The denunciation by the Wayúu of Bahía Portete, which concluded with the plea ''DON'T LEAVE US ON OUR OWN'' (original in upper case), urged a commission to be sent into their territory to find ''native people who will take you to the real site of the incident and who won't deceive you.''
ONIC accused La Guajira local authorities "of having prior knowledge of what occurred (the massacre)" and of not taking measures to comply with "their functions to defend the lives and integrity of the Wayúu people."
