Bahrain changed hands between the warring Persians and Arabs until it was finally conquered in 1783 by the Al Khalifa family the current rulers.

Bahrain remained a protectorate of Great Britain (Britain concluded several treaties with the Shaikh of Bahrain and other Gulf rulers in order to protect their trade route to India in 1861) until 1968, when the agreement between the two countries was cancelled by mutual consent.
