Baia Sprie used to be a major producer of antimony but since the current workings are in the lower levels that are not nearly as rich, stibnites from this location are essentially non-existent from new mining.
In fact, Baia Sprie is only being operated by a skeleton crew and any new minerals are being dug out of old workings by the miners when they have time to explore.
Baia Sprie is the finest location for these barites and indeed to my knowledge the only locality for the realgar inclusions.

The rain or rainy snow we experienced in Baia Mare and Baia Sprie was replaced by genuine snow and the surroundings slowly transformed to a real winter wonderland.
The road was bad though and at the end of Cavnic we had to make a stop to equip the front wheels of the trusty Dacia with a pair of chains.

In Baia Mare, an old mining town, we went to see the county radio club where YO5KAD, the club's well equipped station is located.
Considering that Baia Mare is a city of the size of Satu Mare, I expected to see the same big number of active amateur radio operators; however I met only a couple, and only at the club.
We continued our journey by car to Baia Sprie, also a very old mining town; the first documented mention of this place dates to the year 1329.
