		Broadly speaking, Baigorri sees a shift taking place right now from on-site to remote interpreting, and he suggests a parallel between this shift and the previous, major one from consecutive to simultaneous in the 1930s and 40s.
		Baigorri himself documents very well the very serious reasons behind the move to simultaneous at ILO: the need to save time, the feeling that repeated consecutive in several languages somehow stiffened proceedings, and the wish to enable a more spontaneous debate.
		In other words, Baigorri’s depiction of the “opportunities” of RI lacks an idea of shared professional commitment to an organization and to the people that make it, whereas I am sure that commitment was there in the 1930’s in Geneva or in 1946-48 in Nurnberg.

		The town of Baigorri (Saint Etienne de Baigorry - French renamed it) comes from Basque or Eskuara (Basse Navarre spelling) "ibai" + "gorri" meaning "river" and "red" or simply "Red River." For many years the river flowed a burnt sienna or reddish color due to the amount of iron ore found in the surrounding area.
